How do you calculate the number of backlinks needed to reach Page one of a Search engine for a particular keyword phrase. Page rank link affect would be of interest as well.

    read the forum a little bit more. Use Yahoo Site explorer to find what your estimated competition backlinks are. Just having more backlinks doesn't mean you win though.

    Hey there,
    SERP calculations is a watery topic, since backlinking is only part of the game really. There are a lot of other factors involved, such as and especially, on-site optimization and content.

    Another problem with getting a backlink count is that they are never precise. Precise backlink counts are impossible, since you won't find a search engine releasing their numbers as it would expose their ranking algorithm.

    If you would like to go that route though, have a look at Yahoo Site Explorer to give you an estimate but please treat it as such and do not base your SEO strategy on these numbers only.

    First thing you need to do is to analyse the top 10 or top 5 positions on your target keyword, then you can base the amount of backlinks from those top 5 sites.

    I used to spend time calculating that, but it`s so worthless I almost never do it now. Because you can`t get an accurate answer, and because you`ll be way better off building those backlinks, than counting how many you need Plus, as said above, off-page optimization is not the only factor. You can get your niche site ranked #1 without any off-page SEO (or very little), just a good on-page optimization.
