Generating start-up capital (ie. money)

This is one of the "hardest" problems people have when starting up their internet business.

How do you start a business with no money?

The short answer: you don't.

(Okay, you CAN, but you're putting yourself in a rough position to start with)

But the good news is that starting an internet business is a billion times (estimated) cheaper than starting an offline business.

For an offline business, starting from scratch you'd easily spend ten grand.

How much do you need to get cracking on an internet business? It really depends on your business model, but to get yourself going well, it's good to have $100 or so under your belt for various expenses (ideally, the more you have, the better).

Again, I know it's possible to start a business with no money, but this thread is more about the issue of generating startup capital.

I think too often we want to jump into internet marketing and make our first million by three thirty that afternoon.

If you're struggling to make money online so you can give your new business a decent boost, then make sure you don't ignore offline opportunities.

We all want to be internet millionairs, and that's a great dream to pursue, but remember you'll need to do some hard yards to get there.

If you don't have any money to buy a domain name, or buy decent web hosting, or a tool that you need, then the answer is simple: go and earn it.

We just need to "shelf" the pride for a few weeks, and go and do some odd jobs for people. Mow some lawns, help weed the old lady's garden from next door, help a friend set up their internet connection and give them a crash course on how to send emails.

There are a trillion possibilities (again, just an estimate) all around us, we just need to reach out and take them.

Friends, families, and neighbours are usually more than happy to throw a few bucks your way if you tell them why you need it, and if you perform a service for them in return.

The amount of money it takes to start an internet business is so small that it really is easy to generate the startup capital you need.

And remember, when you do these little jobs, keep that money ONLY for your internet business. Don't spend it on anything else. That money is earmarked for your internet business, and needs to stay that way.

And with that, I'll stand down from my soapbox for the day...

I hope it helps put a few things in perspective!

cheers
Sam

I read a post somewhat related to this.

If you really want to start a business, you'd really need to invest on something even a little.

I guess a good starting point would be to work with IMers like doing linkbuilding, article writing, etc... you earn at the same time you learn as well. It's a good start to have your own business.

    Definately!

One of my first "gigs" was doing some programming work for a well known internet marketing guru. Solid income, and I got to learn about the business from "within".

It's great if you can get it, but certainly not the only way - we occasionally have a cleaner come over and clean the place up, and I was talking to him this morning - he's making a tonne of money with his business due to a smart business structure and growth plan.

All through your business cycle, but especially at the start, we can't be afraid of a little hard work. Even if it's not where you want to end up, it can be a means to an end.

    cheers
