Preventing my server from crashing?

Guys,

I have a big affilite launch coming up in the dating niche. I'm expecting probably about 10,000 visitors to my site at the same time. I'm worried that the server is going to crash.

I'm sure 10,000 visitors at once is not a lot for some of you, but it's a lot for me.

Is there anything I can do to prevent my server from crashing? Should I be worried with 10k visitors?

One thing I did was get a "Dedicated Server." I heard that a good thing to do. Anything else I can do?

Also, if anyone knows of anything specific servers or hosting plans for this kind of thing I' d greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

G

Just make sure that your Dedicated Server has enough CPU Speed, and at least 2GB of RAM.

    That should keep it.

The simple answer is: You can't.

You can't really prevent your server from crashing, but you can prevent your site from crashing. Setup a cluster of servers, ensure DNS is separate from your main server, and setup load balancing. The load will then be spread amongst multiple servers, so if one server crashes, there's others in place to pickup the load. Just ask your hosting company about it.

Or if you're going to be getting heavy traffic for a prolonged period, generally the best thing to do is separate your services. mySQL on one server, Apache on another server, e-mail on another, etc.

10,000 visitors "at the same time" is a big deal for a single server - do you really mean "at the same time"? Also you need to consider the bandwith to the server.
