Anyone in college and doing IM at the same time?

Anyone hear an undergraduate in college and having success in IM at the same time? I Thought it would be cool to hear peoples stories.

Where do you go to school?
What's your major?
How much time do you put into IM weekly?
Where are you in your IM "journey"

I'm a soon to be junior at the unversity of maryland, studying computer science. Not making much right now, but set a goal of $150 a week by january, and am totally confident in being able to do it

Cool dude. I have graduated now, but went to Kennesaw State University just north of Atlanta, Ga. where I got my degree in Psychology and Statistics.

I am a full-time IMer now, but while in college I would say that I put roughly 15 hours per week into internet marketing, and was able to earn $1,500-$2,000 per month consistently with affiliate marketing.

My advice to you would be to pick a specific business model, and learn everything that you can about it. College is a great time to start internet marketing, because it gives you some time to figure things out without the real world pressure (at least in my case).

I don't know what your long-term goals are, but I can tell you that working for myself via affiliate marketing is way better than having a job!

I'm an undergraduate. One of the guys that I know who is having success in IM is Desmond Ong. You can search for him here.

Where do you go to school?
I'm in Singapore, doing my final year of degree. I am same as Desmond, a Malaysian.

    What's your major?
    Biological sciences.

How much time do you put into IM weekly?
Currently 3-4 hours per day as now it's my school vacation (doing part time job at the same time). When school starts, I may have to cut it down to 1 hour per day.

Where are you in your IM "journey"

I get started not long ago. I would say I have passed that "confusing-and-wandering" period. Now focusing on building good relationship and list in my niche as it's the most important factor to be succeed online in my opinion (after so much pain, haha).

Currently using affiliate marketing as a model but I believe as long as I continue focusing on building and nurturing my list, I am able to switch between being an affiliate and product owner eventually. But right now I just want to focus on list-building.

My advice to you would be to pick a specific business model, and learn everything that you can about it.
Yes. Totally agree. It's pretty simple actually. Either become an affiliate or product owner. Haha. Add on one more thing, as the time goes, we should specialise in one area/ skill, such as copywriting, product launching etc. Other stuffs? You can just outsource or JV with other people. My opinion based on my observation from the past.

College is a great time to start internet marketing, because it gives you some time to figure things out without the real world pressure (at least in my case).
I do agree. But my pressure is to have the cashflow to support my business. Tough but worth to stay in this field.

I did, but have since graduated.

    UCLA
    Political Science
Probably about 10 hours...depended on work load, obviously.
Do it full-time and do very well. By very well, I mean more than I'd probably be making had I put my degree to use.

I was in my third year of Fire Protection when my Internet marking career really blew up with activating my first Adwords campaign.

I very quickly started pulling in $500 a day average and made the choice to leave college and put full time effort into growing my business.

First thing I did was go out and find a lawyer I trusted and felt comfortable with. You should always have a lawyer when starting a business first to help incorporate your company and for protection against legal bullying. Thick skin is a must as Your business grows so will the odds of running into legal issues.

I have been in the Internet marketing business for four years now and been threatened to sue over seven times now (90% of the threats didn't have a legal leg to stand on and was mostly bullying) A lawyer helps you sleep at night in situations like that

In Ontario where I,m from the base fee to incorporate is $400 and anything you are charged above that the lawyer pockets. I used this knowledge to price lawyers and find one who didn't try to completely rip me off. Some would charge nearly $2000 and that's over $1600 purenprofite. The worst part being it is all outsorced to their Law Clurk so they literally do no work for it.

Second thing I did was hire a good accountant and book keeper. Someone who was experienced with Ecommerse and more importantly PayPal reports.

In the four years I have been online I have become a master of all aspects in Internet marketing. The first thing you must learn is effective sales copy that converts. Creating sales letters that turn cold traffic into paying customers feels like magic and is the key element to making money online.

Second thing I became an expert in was paid traffic with ppc using google, yahoo, msn and facebook. If my sales letter could not convert paid traffic enough to be profitable I did not want to even bother with that market and moved on. I spend $20,000 a month with adwords alone for just one campaign out of the many I have for individual sites.

      *** Tip ***

when you get into the big leagues when it comes to paid advertising - Pay for a credit card that awards travel reward points. Find one that gives you 1 point for every 1 dollar. I know rake in enough points each month to take a free trip anywhere in the world a month if I wished
      *********

The third thing I mastered was SEO and can rank in the top three for the most competitive terms in my niches. I quickly learned in SEO there truly was No such thing as free traffic when it came to google. To rank for the most competitive terms quickly will cost you money monthly, not to google but a load of individual third party sites.

I have never looked back when it came to college. The way I look at it is with every marketing guide I read that is my education and wether or not I make money in the end, that is my pass or fail.

If you want an online business and a full time income, you need to treat it like a business and full time job....

Not a hobby or slot machine that takes little effort and could make you rich. It takes real hard work and dedication much like going to college to make it in Internet marketing.

This is my story in a nutshell and I hope it will help some of you in a similar situation to mine four years ago.

      Cheers

P.s. Sorry for crappy grammar and such. It's 2:30 AM and a hammered this off with one finger and my iPad chillin in bed lol

        Hey everyone,

I'm a undergraduate student right now studying Kinesiology at University of Waterloo.

I'm really just started looking into this whole thing because i just wanted to start some type of entrepreneurship. I've been looking up some ideas and internet marketing came up as the most favorable idea.

I haven't really been trying to follow any specific guide because there are just so many and am really not sure what to look for. I was thinking of starting an information base website that talks about health issues especially with muscular injuries, from there i'll try to bring in traffic (don't really know which way...SEO?? adsense??) and try to do some affiliate marketing with the site and banner advertising. This hopefully might get me some revenue to pay for part of tuition.

So to any pros out there that can give me some tips if this would work or not, I would really appreciate it.

  • One of the beauties of Internet Marketing is flexibility: you can set your own working schedule and it's totally part-time friendly... perfect for college students!

I wish I had discovered Internet Marketing 15 years ago back in my college years!
