Paypal takes EVERYTHING - Please help me, Warriors : (

So recently Paypal limited my account once I started having a couple $300ish days. They asked for proof of my SS, address, and photo ID. I sent them ALL of these. Today they informed me that they have permanently limited my account. Not only trapping $320 in my Paypal account, but also essentially ending any chance I have at using online payments for my IM career.

They said that everything was fine, except that because I don't have acredit score yet, they couldn't verify my SS (they ONLY use CC companies to verify these). They said they can't do business with me anymore.

I have a TON of subscriptions that will now be cancelled and I'll lose services. I also have lost almost ALL income now. Is there ANYTHING I can do? I've done nothing wrong and my social security number is 100% accurate, and yet I'm losing a ton of things that I've built up.

Should I try and build a credit score and appeal it? How do I salvage all of my subscriptions services? I'm so distraught right now : (

They seem totally closed off to helping me, and try and shut down any avenue I suggest for verification.

Please, please help me, I'm ready to give this up altogether.

Did you talk to them on the phone?

Do you have a credit card? A cell phone with a monthly plan? Your own apartment?

All of these require a tap on your credit. It's weird that they say you have no credit score...

Wait are you under 18? That could be it... Maybe get a cc in your and a parent's name. Just have like a $200 limit on it. That's how I started my credit.

I have no credit yet as I JUST turned 18. Do you think they'll reinstate it if I do it?

Try this it's worth a shot and it won't cost you much. Go to Rite Aid or wherever Greendot is sold in your area. Make sure it's greendot. Buy the card, It will cost you $25 however $20 of that is spendable. When you register the Green Dot Card they will ask for your SS. Now add the Green Dot Card as a CC to PayPal.

If you can't open a checking account for some reason go on line to Peoples Bank in paris texas.

Also it's not the end of the world not to have paypal. Use Click Bank and or Plimus. They both accept PayPal in your behalf but don't need you to have a PayPal Account.

This is invaluable info. A perfect way to seperate my personal finances and my occassional "play" finances. Maybe another way to hide a little money from the ex.

Call them, they have very friendly customer service and they will walk you through the application process. And yes, you do have to fax or mail ID information including SS# (that's the whole point, right) You wire them your first deposit (or mail) and then after that you can upload PayPal money to them. They are a real bank located in Texas, not just an online bank.

Because technically they are re-selling your product, not processing payment. If a customer pays via PayPal, it goes through CB's or Plimus' PayPal account. They then pay you your share (Retail price - processing fee), or if it's an affiliate sale, they take their fee and split the remainder according to the percentage split you set up in advance.

Ya bro that's what it is. Your not allowed to get a credit card until you are 18. It's to protect you when you're a minor.

I would try to get a credit card on your own. Most cc companies love people like you. Just try to get a really low limit because it's not free money even though it feels like it.

That will establish your credit presence.

You are looking at a hard situation and I hope it works out for you. Just try the route of explaining what is happening once you get your cc sorted out. Once you've done that if there is still no joy, then don't just give up. Rebuild, even if you have to take a week to gather your strength. However, you know already that you have a system that works. If one part of the system stops working just change that part.

I can imagine that it is emotionally taxing though.

      They absolutely do not.

Branlan, I suggest forming a business as its own legal entity, changing all of your personal information (IP, Address, Phone, etc) and making a new PayPal account.

PayPal doesn't care about credit and all of those things.

A new debit card from a new bank account (business checking account) will suffice as a credit card to PayPal.

On the subject of buying things, you can use Another Greendot card to buy anything you want. PayPal accepts CCs without you having an account.

I can verify this, in the UK we have the titanium card, which for all intents and purposes is mastercard, but it is prepaid.

George, your information is right on. Get a prepaid visa and register your name and your SS with the vendor. You can also apply as suggested above for a low limit credit card. Since you are now 18, you can sign contracts. Open a checking account with a local bank. They usually have student accounts. Get going. It will all work out for you... Don't give up. You seem to have a great start in this IM game. Don't allow one setback to take you backward.

Good Luck & Congratulations on running a viable business.

I use my mom's account (she has an awesome credit score) and it happened to me in the past but as the paypal account were my mom's I didn't have any problem at all.

I would give George's method a shot, maybe it works

  • I'd suggest not using PayPal anymore. They are becoming ridiculously stupid in terms of demanding information (I'm surprised they don't have people submit thumbprints and do eyescans, although possibly they want to). Paypal is not the only game in town, although they may the most well known. It's sad most people voluntarily jump through these ridiculous hoops (if they didn't, paypal would go out of business).

Check out alternative payment processesors, especially smaller ones who don't have such ridiculous and extreme requirements. One such one is taketwosolutions.com.

There are about 10-15 other alternatives to PayPal that you can use.

As a side note, I'm guessing the reason the two $300 days triggered it is because starting next year Paypal has to report any income over $600 to the IRS.

You can have more than 1 paypal account. I have one for business, and one for personal stuff.

I would follow the above advice to get a credit card asap.

Also, I don't know if this will help but I would try selling and buying a few physical items on ebay when you do get the approval for an account back. Not sure I can confirm it, but for me I think having started initially using paypal for ebay has made using my account pretty simple - even during some funky stuff I've had go on. I think they like to see the physical goods, and stuff being mailed to physical addresses they can track.

Jill, that's interesting. I've used PayPal for years for eBay transactions, but that is with my personal account. I've only ever used my business account for well, business related stuff. Would you recommend a few eBay, or any other physical item sales, with my business account?

Branlan, sorry for horning in on your thread, but I found that interesting. I hope you can get things cleared up, and get yourself back on track again.

Ebay is a business model for a lot of people.

If I sell off some software that was initially bought for my business, I'll put it in my business ebay account which is linked to my business paypal account. Also, if I sell goods for someone else in my account I'll do it through the business. Those fees all get written off.

Also, if I buy something business related on ebay, I buy it through the business accounts.

Personal account is just that. If I'm buying anything that can't be considered a business expense, I'll get it through that personal account.

Also, it's easy to transfer funds from my personal account to the business account and visa versa.

For example, my bank would charge me extra if I wanted to set up my business checking account to pay me in my personal account. With the paypal accounts I can send money to myself, and once it's in my personal paypal account I can pull it into my personal checking account.

          Branlan,

Did you actually speak to a PayPal representative by phone? If not, try that as their service is much better over the phone than through emails. Try asking them what you should do. You can't be the only one to not have a credit history so I'm sure that they could tell you exactly what to do a lot faster and more accurate than anyone here can.

            Also, when you do this....

Make sure that you remain calm and rational. Let them know that you understand why they have done what they have done (to protect themselves) and that you just want to provide them with the information they need, and to get it cleared up.

We had an "issue" a couple of months ago, and I can guarantee that if it weren't for the fact of waiting 48 hours to actually call in so we were calm that we NEVER would have gotten the situation resolved, and they had/have a lot of our money, so for us waiting 6 months wasn't really an option, but was a reality that we were looking at.

When the account was limited, they even went as far as retrieving recent transfers to our bank accounts, and canceling them thus putting that money back into the PP accounts which were "limited" which gave us no access to them.

To continue doing business we did switch over to 2checkout BUT I/We couldn't stand them - they delayed our payments, and generally did everything they could to keep our money for as long as they could. By the end of it, I seriously wondered why there were not more people complaining about them as a company.

If you are just looking to use paypal as a platform to pay for IM good, and services - Just get a pre-paid credit card and pay that way. Even if you don't have a paypal account you can still pay using the paypal interface with a credit card..pre-paid or not.

If you need a payment processor for business purposes (to accept payments) look at authorize.net or do what we are doing, and get set up with a local bank - If you have a PNC bank in your area they seem pretty easy to work with, and so far have been very professional in their dealings with us.

Because you are so young, and you obviously have a desire to be in this business - it's probably best that you get set up correctly right from the beginning anyway, instead of finding yourself in a position like we were in a couple months ago, or like so many other people have found themselves in.

              Jeremy,
Were the transactions still pending or completed? If they attempt to reach into your bank account to retrieve funds and no funds are available could that have prevented them from taking the money back?

The reason I ask is I routinely have money withdrawn from Paypal into one bank account which I then transfer to a second back account at a different bank in order to prevent stuff like this from happening.

                I feel for you Brandon.

I have heard alot of stories regarding them swiping money from under 18's though, before I even read further I knew you must fall in that category.

I am currently having my own problems with Paypal regarding a transaction which the customer took out an unauthorised chargeback for. I cant even get on the phone to the chargeback department or find out what credit card company I am fighting against.

They offer a very convenient service however, I think most people just stay with them because they have no real competition, which is a shame, they would probably buck up their ideas if they had.

I don't know about moving somewhere else but you could take out an account in your mums name or an elder sibling.

I think they can only do that for pending transactions, not completed.

They can't go into your bank account I'm pretty sure of that, even if you do have money in there.

I don't know about the Ebay thing. I sold almost 4 grand worth of music cds from my collection, and then used my paypal debit card to buy a new pc. Everything went through. On my way out I decided to buy some blank dvdrs and was denied by paypal.

They had put a security hold on my card for unusual activity. So after being embarrassed in the checkout line, I had to call them as say yes I bought a pc, yes I bought hamburger, yes I bought a book. etc..

Paypal is a PIA. This is what happens when you have monopolies in the marketplace. They can do just about whatever they want.

This is exactly the problem when using a 3rd party processor like paypal. You become completely dependent on their draconian company.

Thousands of people have had paypal problems as seen in this forum PayPal Sucks Forums as well as all the many other forums out there.

SOLUTION: GET YOUR OWN CREDIT CARD PROCESSOR / MERCHANT ACCOUNT!!!

You can have your own merchant account within 24 hours, which are CHEAPER than paypal btw!

Here are some links for you

Credit Card Processing, Payments | Intuit Merchant Services (My favorite from the makers of QUICKBOOKS!)

Credit Card Processing, Merchant Accounts, Accept Credit Cards

PayPal Alternative, Alternatives To PayPal, Merchant Account, Accept Credit Cards Online - Home

You can even charge monthly your subscription fees.

    Hope this helps...

And merchant account providers are not draconian? Yea right. To the OP... good luck qualifying for a merchant account when you're 18 without a credit history. PayPal makes it easy so anyone and their brother can accept money online but because of that they're pretty militant in protecting their business. Not saying it's right or it doesn't suck for you and others but it's the way the cookie crumbles if you want to use their services.

Merchant account providers also limit accounts. Dan Kennedy warns about this way back in the 70's and 80's when info marketers started processing a lot of orders.

Now obviously since you have to apply for a merchant account vs. a PayPal account they appear to be more flexible but that's because they already did some vetting on you upfront unlike PayPal.

But both PayPal and merchant account providers view us as high risk.

There are many examples of high-risk merchants, such as telemarketers (inbound or outbound), Internet/e-commerce businesses, merchants in the travel and cruise industries, Internet auctions and businesses offering membership clubs.
Source: business - How to Get Approved for a Merchant Account

So it's not this evil PayPal out to get everyone. It's the nature of of the beast which is our business.

You're on the right track of getting a credit card (don't go crazy with it) and establishing your own credit history.

I could not say it better myself so I won't, but let me quite something directly from "National Merchant Bankcard" (the third link shown in Greenovini's post)

With a Real Merchant Account, your funds are directly deposited into your personal or business bank account, which you control and which is also protected by Federal Banking Regulations.

With PayPal, your money is deposited into a PayPal Account, which PayPal Fully Controls. Since PayPal is NOT a bank, they do not need to follow federal banking regulations. These regulations are designed to help the "Average Joe" avoid issues like having their bank account frozen for weeks or months with no explanation.

"Who would trust their money with a bank that could do that?"

Sadly, Paypal routinely freezes its customers' accounts for almost anything and without warning. Once an account is frozen, the funds are often held by PayPal for months on end with Absolutely No Recourse for the merchant.

And you are case in point here. I would take this as a hard lesson learned, you are now making enough money where you no longer need simplistic solutions like paypal - sure, they are good for when you make a few bucks here and there, but as you now know - you don;t want them handling your real money.

First off, they didn't "take" everything.
It's on hold and you'll be able to get it once you've met their qualifications.
Paypal is a bank...and asking for pre-existing credit isn't exactly evil.
If you walked into a car dealership and got denied I doubt you would be surprised.
You just turned 18 and you're considered a risk to *any* financial institution.

Truth is...You have no credit. Your SSN doesn't even exist in the system yet. That's not Paypal's fault. It's also not your fault. It's simply your current situation.

Here's what you need to do:

    Get a credit card.
The easiest ones to get are Department Store cards like Macy's, GAP, etc.
Use it for a small purchase, then pay it back in full 1 month later.
    After paying, wait 1 month.
Call Paypal back and ask them to reconsider.
    Ta-da....your account is reopened.

In the meantime, try using Clickbank, 2Checkout, Plimus, good friend's Paypal account, etc.

Sorry for the drama...but it's not permanent. You've only been sidetracked for 2 months. Get ready for many, many more business sidetracks.

There are actually two problems that are involved. By saying "I'm now 18" you tell paypal you violated TOS originally as you must 18 to have a paypal account unless you have a parent/guardian guaranteeing the account.

I don't agree with George (though I also use greendot and he suggested it to me a long time ago) - because the money cards to do not report to credit bureaus. They are not credit cards - but debit cards that are pre-funded. Requiring the SSN is likely to meet money laundering laws.

Apply for a credit card - or get a secured credit card where you must place money in reserve in case you default. The moment you have some credit established - even if you haven't used the card, the link between credit and your SSN will be established at the credit bureaus. If you are still a student, a student card with a parental signature would do it, too, and be easy to get.

Using the card a little here and there will build a credit file and it's something you should be doing anyway.

To deal with paypal you must be calm, factual and patient. Calling when you are upset or angry will not help your case. What you should be asking paypal right now is "once I have established a link to credit, can I re-open my account".

No guarantee you'll get the answer you want but if you are pushy or demanding it won't happen. Meanwhile, check out other options and make a plan for getting your folks to resign up for the other option.

You've already received some good courses of action from other members. While waiting to get a credit card I would look into seeing if you have a family member who has a Paypal account. that you could use for a short amount of time in order to keep yoru busy running.

If you're really desperate you could also reach out to a friend who has a Paypal account so you can accept payments but it needs to be someone you trust completely.

I've seen this done a few times here in the forum and I've also done this with a friend, but again....you need to have complete trust in them because money does strange things to people.

        Hi Kay,

Sorry you don't agree, however I have proof positive that all they need is a GreenDot. I've helped over 10 people with credit in the toilet get PayPal Premium accounts. Step one, Greendot, Step 2, Peoples Bank, Step 3 PayPal. Everyone I've helped still has their account.

Why does it work, I don't know. All I know is it works. One point the OP made is that they don't want it to verify credit, they want it to verify SS#. GreenDot and Peoples bank do that. Green Dot "takes your word for it" and posts it as fact and People's bank verifies it. P.S. If GreenDot doesn't just take your word for it they sure have a fast way of checking because It's all done in about 10 minutes over the phone.

They can't go into your bank account I'm pretty sure of that, even if you do have money in there.
Oh, yes they can. It doesn't matter if a transaction is completed or not, they have the right to reverse it for just about any reason they want. You agreed to that when you opened an account (you did read the TOS, right?).

          Tim -

That double account system will not help. What happens is PayPal goes after it and if the account is empty, you get slapped with a bounce check fee from the bank, plus you still owe PayPal and they can even take you to court for this, if they want.

Good info - just couldn't figure out how the credit rating bureaus would have a record linking the ssn to a credit source if the source didn't report. Guess that's why you need people's bank....

But - for that matter - if you applied for credit that might be enough to provide that link even if you were declined (not that I'm suggesting that).

A double account is essential if one account is linked to Paypal. Yes you might end up with a negative balance and overdraft charges on the linked account but you get to eat while you look for a way to resolve that.

    Brandon,

    I would do three things:

    1) Call PayPal. Be VERY calm. Do NOT argue with them (no matter what they say). Ask what your options are. Ask their advice. Make a note of who you speak with -- get their name.

If that doesn't work, write a letter explaining the situation and pay $15 to send it via Express Mail. Don't e-mail! Dig a little. Find out who the top people are and send it to the appropriate person (you need someone with the power to overrule the flunkies).

    2) Get a credit card. I don't know if "prepaid" credit cards report to the credit bureaus or not. I would ask. If they do, then you might be able to get one of those VERY quickly.

If not, apply for a bank credit card or store credit card (like JC Penney or Sears).

    3) Do you have a parent with a PayPal account? (Or a parent with credit who would be willing to set up a PayPal account?) That could help in the short term.

Hang in there! It will be OK. The good news is that you are now 18 and CAN get a credit card of some sort.

    Regards,

    John

Get a secured Visa. Wells Fargo and US Bank offer one.

You'll have to open an account and put cash on deposit that backs your credit limit.

Take a maximum cash advance against the card. Hold the cash for 30 days, then pay off the entire balance with the cash you've held in your checking account.

    DO NOT SPEND THE MONEY!

Do that for 6 months solid.

Then get a free credit report and check your FICO. Should be good to go.

Thanks for your input everyone. The problem is that this isn't a temporary limitation anymore, now there are no suggestions to "resolve" it in the resolution center. I called by phone and one employee said I could likely get the account back by establishing credit and trying later, while another said "the decision is final" (whatever that means) and that there was nothing I could do.

I would take the advice of the other posters who said to file a legal business entity. An LLC in the state of Washington is $200 and you can file online which expedites the process. Then get an EIN (online) and take both to the bank to set up a checking account. You should be able to get all that within a few days then sign up for a new PayPal account. You don't have to use your SSN, just your business' EIN.

As you have mentioned in you second post that you are not 18 years old so i am sure that this is the reason why paypal limit your account, they have taken these steps just to secure you when you are a minor. It would be better to wait till you are 18 and then provide them all the proofs.

I've heard about these issues with paypal and I've wanted to get a merchant account for that reason as well as due to the fact that from time to time, for reasons that neither paypal nor my host company can explain, people have problems using their credit card at the checkout at my site.

I've had a couple of 300 dollar days but only when I've ran sales. However, the amount of money I make regularly has been steadily increasing(took in $255.00 bucks yesterday). So if paypal just starts freezing people's accounts due to making more money, I definitely need to look elsewhere as this can prove to be absolutely devastating.

I will be researching the sites that have been provided here.

      1. get some credit in check

      2. see if your folks (or an uncle, cousin, sibling, whatever) will sign up for a paypal account that you can access to receive payments in the meantime. Offer them a small percentage cut of your profits. Also, set aside enough for them to cover taxes on.

      3. Color your hair blonde, and have a "selective memory." I personally would select to remember the employee who told me I could get my account back.

Either way you may get your old account back, but if you can't you can open an account for business which is completely different.

How can you be in the US for a time, and have NO credit score!?!?!? YEAH, you can try building a credit score, but I imagine it will take at least 6 months before they will be willing to look at it favorably. It takes about 2 YEARS to fill up most areas.

If you JUST turned 18, you are lucky they even talked to you. A lot of this stuff is just too tolerant.

BTW if you want GOOD credit, here is a way....
DON'T apply for more than 2-3 credit cards every 6 months AND, if one declines you, it may be good to layoff for 6 months, though you can try to get them to reconsider.

REASON? 4+ inquires is looked at as a BAD sign, and they want to see a new account for every inquiry. I was actually turned down once for having ONE inquiry! When I called them and pointed out the new account, I got the credit!

DON'T get credit than can have a minimum payment over say 30% of your yearly income.

They don't want your total CURRENT debt to be more than 30% of your income.

DON'T use more than 30% of the available credit.

They don't want you to use all your available credit on ANY card.

SHOOT for maybe having 5 cards.

They want to see a fair number of accounts. I know 12 may be too much.

With any luck, you can get a REALLY good score. I used what I have heard, and my own experience to develop those guidelines. Like I said, MOST bad things roll off your FICO in about 6 months. MOST items only have 2 years of history. Things like bankruptcies and public reports may be there for SEVEN years!

BTW debit cards and prepaid cards might not report. And you probably CAN'T get a merchant account! THEY generally check credit ALSO! When I got paypal pro, wells fargo DID run my credit! BTW THAT is what is known as an inquiry. Rental car companies ALSO run inquiries!

BTW credit card companies OBVIOUSLY run inquiries also. I don't know how to start that, though having a bank account should certainly help. MY credit probably started when my father cosigned for my car. We were BOTH FULLY responsible for the payments, so they could use the BEST score to determine credit. Payments, or lack thereof, affect BOTH reports. I paid on time, so I built good credit.

It isn't difficult, many have done it.

As to people talking about credit... Well I don't know where you got this information from. If PayPal said it somewhere they were bluffing, as I know for a fact they are happy for people with terrible credit records to have merchant accounts.

Just go to the post office and get a pre-pay card, go home and open a new account. Simple as that, and it takes less than a day. I know because I have done it, PayPal know I have done it and are quite happy about it.

    Go fix it.

      Everything will be okay.

There are plenty of adults who have had issues with PP through no fault of their own. Never leave money in any of these types of accounts.

Get a pre-paid CC, a high school checking account and open a completely new PP account with a different email, phone, etc and you should be good to go. Another suggestion is to get a trusted family member to open for you.

PP wants to be able to verify your identity. Unfortunately, all the crazies in the world have caused inconveniences for a nice young man pursuing entrepreneurship (which I applaud you for!).

Don't let this derail you - work around it. Biz owners learn how to be creative in adversity. You will be fine.

      Hang in there!

Brandon, here's another option if you decide to try for a merchant account...

Go to your nearest Sam's Club and sign up for a business membership. You might have to file a DBA with your local gov't first. One of the member benefits is access to a merchant account with fairly lenient approval standards.

I believe Costco offers something similar, but I can't say for sure...

I've had 2 accounts frozen with paypal. The last time with over $10,000 that I needed to pay affiliate commissions. Their "canned" reply to my emails took 2 days to get back to me each time with no help whatsoever. Just a mention of their terms stating no mlm or proxy type programs where I was running a simple 1 level affiliate program. They didn't want to know. It took almost 2 months before they would release the funds!

They stink. If you're using them with a small-ish turnover they're fine & well known for your customers etc. But as soon as you start taking in larger amounts MOVE to a merchant account.

Also consider starting a corporation. Corporations are legal separate identities from yourself. You can apply for accounts in the corporations name, not yours.

However, that doesn't stop credit grantors from asking for your personal information if they choose. I don't know paypal's stance on that issue.

I think legalzoom advertises their services for incorporation for a couple hundred bucks.
