How to Get a Football Pool Site ("data site") to Rank Better

Hey guys,

I have a new project and I am trying to get a football pool website to rank better. I have to do some SEO work to the site and then Im going to start building links targeting whichever keywords I choose...

Dealing with this type of a site is different though. It isn't content based where I can create RSS feeds and get a good keyword density on every page, etc. It's a LOT of numbers, member names, data and score boards and stuff like that.. So I am wondering, aside from putting some good META tags on the site, how else can I SEO a site like that?

The only 2 things that come to mind for me is to get the META fields filled out right, and build links with keyword anchor text. Aside from that, Im not sure what could be done. Any help would really be greatly appreciated!

thanks!

I think you need to start by picking some keywords that would be relatively easy to rank for and build out some content. Yes, you may have a lot of numbers, but you also need to think about content people are going to want to read, and build that. Sometimes going for the most popular keywords can be a tough game to play, but once you rank for some easier keywords it becomes easier to go after the big ones. Matt Cutts of google recently referred to this strategy as the Katamari Technique. It's based on a Namco game where you roll a ball and pick up dust until you become a star! Good luck.

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.
