What happened to me on Twitter?

I made my first twitter account...all the sudden my email was slammed with people following me before I even posted anything! Most internet marketers.

I had 270 followers by the end of the day. Now im down to 35.....

What happened? Is there some kind of automated following system those people have or what?

  • Many tweeters use bots to inflate their following numbers. They follow you, hoping for a follow back. When you don't follow back some will unfollow.

  • Yep, what Ryan said. It's all automated, including the "unfollow" if you don't follow 'em back.

    Do the 35 people who're left know you? If not, they're not real followers either. I say this because you hadn't even posted anything yet. So if you don't have a reputation built up and not even one post, those are likely "fake followers." Don't be surprised or get discouraged if they unfollow. Just focus on interacting with folks who are interested in what you have to say.

    • That's the problem with Twitter unfortunately, it's a great tool for social interaction but the world and it's dog seems to trying to milk money out of it nowadays!
  • Yep, but it is a great tool for driving traffic...

    I dont do all this auto follow crap i just tweet and people come and see what I am tweeting. I have a few twitter accounts in a few niches and it seems to be a fantastic way of getting traffic pretty quickly.

    I only follow about 40 people and thats enough for me....

  • Turn off the option to receive emails when new people follow you. It will drive you crazy.

    • That was my idea too. Before I figured that out, I went crazy for all the mails that came in my inbox from 'new friends' that wanted to follow me. Life is crazy
