redirecting google serps

i was wondering how google treats redirects to the SAME domain. For an example I have a website that has funny widget pictures on the home page. I start a blog writing content that has relevent keywords so that I can rank for "funny widget". When that blog post is in top position of google and a visitor clicks on that link I want them to be redirected to my homepage instead of the blog post. How does google treat that? Will that earn me a slap?

Depends on the type of redirect.. unless it's a 301 I wouldn't risk it.

im not thinking about a 301 Redirect. more of like a

    bluewidgets.com/postpage redirects to
    bluewidgets.com

using the /postpage to gain rankings in serps but ultimate goal is for users to see bluewidgets.com

well, I would not say the 301 redirect would be a great idea in this case. As Matt said some time back that 301 doesn't pass the full value to new page, so if you would do 301 your old page to new page, then there would be no guarantee that your new page would get ranked on that keyword. And over the time, your old page would be removed form the index, so no traffic from that source as well.

I would recommend you to link your post content with your home page so that more visitors can visit your home page.
