Do Any of Your Family Members Work in Your Online Business?

A good client of mine who's an insurance agent has his whole family working in his insurance business. His wife is the office manager, his son maintains his website, and his daughter handles his social media accounts like Twitter and Facebook.

What about you? Do any of your family members work in your online business? If so, in what capacity?

My daughter is a university student, and she helps out with article distribution and human spinning of articles. Both she and my son are involved in reposting things like my Twitter and Facebook posts. That's about it.

Do they enjoy it, Kerry? Or are they just basically helping out their mother?

Unfortunately. I thought it would be really cool and really fun to have my younger brother move back and work with me on my projects. Wrong, it's been nothing but problems since. I think out of about a months worth of time he's worked for me, he's probably put in a good 4 hours worth of work. I love my brother, but man he's just not an asset to my business.

I feel you, FaJeeb. I have two brothers like that. Now my sister, on the other hand is aces!

Why in the world would you want a family member to work with you? If you want your business to last in the long run...I would say don't even think about getting your family involved. Even if it's your wife or kids.

One business lesson I've learned over the years is never to work with family or friends...It always turns into a huge disaster.

Some of my far family is stunned after discovering that I press some buttons on the keyboard and money falls out. In fact! They are so interested in what I do & believe it's so easy that they are giving me more attention than they ever have before.

Heck! One of my cousins is literally asking me hardcore questions day & night trying to figure out exactly what I do...And on top of that wants me to baby feed him step by step along the way. It's crazy!

I repeat...Do not make the mistake of getting your family involved. It will end in a big disaster.

Don't mix friendship and business. With family it's even riskier.

I mean with your spouse is one thing, but with a sibling? That's asking for trouble.

Every time I have tried to work with one of my sister's on a project it hasn't happened. Although I did set up my older sister's website for her, she does it all on her own now.

It really depends on the type of relationship you have with your family. Over the years I've come across plenty of family-owned businesses, and I've discovered it's not nearly as disasterous as you might think. Have I come across-family-owned businesses that were disasters? Absolutely! But like I said earlier, it really depends on the type of relationship you have with your family. At least, that's been my experience.

More than anything I want a family business however my family does not so I guess I'm out of luck. It think it would be nice if we could all pull together and really make something awesome but it will never happen.

My wife and I work together in IM. We each have our own accounts and websites, so we sort of compete with each other. That makes it good in one respect because it keeps us motivated to do more.
We do pool our resources and do things for each other, but since we are both extremely competitive, it keeps us on our toes.
So far it is working out quite well and we have been doing this for a little over a year.

None of my family work with me but I just found a partner to work with long-term. Hopefully we can collaborate well together.

My husband was actually the one that started in IM and when I had to stop working he started directing me I am still new and actually took over his WF account as it was on our same internet and would most probably have had the same IP adress.

So he is still very active in helping and directing me and we work well together because If i succeed he succeds as we are pretty much on share all expenses and money to keep the family going.

As far as family outside my wife they have been pretty dissapointing in helping me get things going

That's interesting. You've actually had mixed results with your family - both good and bad.

I tried teaching my daughter how to do stuff online but she wasn't really interested (even though she had asked)

And her ex partner was such an arrogant twat he just assumed he knew a lot more than me anyway even though he wouldn't have known an Internet marketer if he jumped up and bit him in the ass

I've never had any of my family working for me. However, they're great at providing many of the daily hurdles and obstacles that make being in business so challenging, and ask for no remuneration in return. I'm blessed, truly

Currently no. But my younger sister is trying to sell her service on the internet recently. She is a graphic designer, well not quite yet, she is still an undergraduate but I think her artworks are just awesome.

My husband is my VA. He's handling invoicing, balancing accounts, and keeping my sites updated (plugins and such) so I can spend my time writing.

So far it's working out well.

I hired my father handle billing for me after he retired. It keeps him mentally active, he feels good being financially independent, and he's proved to be a great help. The only problem now is that he only ever calls me to talk about work now, nothing else!
