WP Blog vs Regular Site?

On another thread it struck me that not many people realise how powerful blogs are!

So i want people to vote which they prefer, WP Blogs Or Regular sites.

Also, can you state what kind of success you have had.

I've never created a regular website and I wouldn't know how to do it, which is why I went for WordPress which is extremely easy to use even if you have little to no experience with building websites.

I prefer to use Blogs because i find that wordpess is very easy to use and very flexible, no matter what marketing campaign i want to do, wordpress can suppor my needs.

Also, i must admit my sites were usually ugly and they never had much success, but since i swapped to wordpress i have nice looking sites that yield results.

Yeah, I typically use wordpress just because there really isn't a learning curve there. With some of the other ways of doing it, there is amuch more of a learning curve.

I use Wordpress, B2E, Joomla, Dreamweaver and MS Frontpage. They all have their advantages. It doesn't get any easier than Wordpress though.

Google loves blogs for its updated material. It's also easy to post new content quickly.

Even if your normal HTML site is updated frequently, Google will fall in love with it !

Wordpress Rocks! I used to use other tools to make websites but don't anymore. You can make wordpress look like a regular site if you really want to but what's the point? The ease of adding content along with Google loving the structure, you just can't beat it .

I'd vote for a blog, a website is static and making changes to it can be pretty tedious, unless you're from a large company. But its blogs that dominate the internet these days.

WP definitely. Ease of use is through the roof, and blogging software is more SEO friendly for rankings.

Also, the SEO friendly plug-ins and themes are too good to pass up.

I have tried three times to use WordPress but always go back to static. I am at a complete loss. Even reading thru the website, I just can't understand how it works. And I have a computer science degree!

My last attempt I actually got a post up. But I couldn't figure out how to add the correct widgets.

    Wordpress all the way.

A blog is content central. It easier to manage and frequently update your blog. Overall there's more functionality.

    WP Blog vs Regular Site
Please define what you mean by "regular site." Wordpress is not that much different from joomla, drupal, cms made simple, dragon fly,,,,, or any of the other content mangement systems out there.

One of the main differences is "how" the information is presented. Like with joomla - you have the current article at the top, then it breaks into a 2 column layout with the content. Some joomla templates have a built in rating system, and you can see how many times an article has been read - why doesn't wordpress have that?

Personally, I do not like how wordpress presents its content - and that is with a main column.

Take a look at yahoo news and the bbc news - if wordpress looked more like that, then it would really rock.

The wordpress backend is great - but the template system leaves a lot to be desired. Wordpress needs built in article tracking (without a plug-in), article rating, and ways to display links to popular articles at the top of the site.

Wordpress needs more options on how the information is presented to the reader.

regular site - a mini site that is used for ecomerce. has a optin page, sales page, privacy, contact, about. you know just a very basic site that might have a blog attached to it. I know what your saying about wordpress but to be honest this was just blog vs min / regular site.

when it comes to blog platformsi will do a thread for that soon enough.

I'm still a static html guy, but I'm thinking about redesigning some of my sites with WP ... but I still can't get over how ugly and busy the normal everyday blogs are. There's just so much going on, you don't know what to look at or where to click. I like my visitors to do exactly what I want them too and not get distracted with shiny buttons and links.

But, I do see the value in interactivity within the site ... and I'm sure there's themes that'll work like I want them too ... I just haven't spent the time looking into it yet.

When you say "regular site" - I'am thinking yahoo news, bbc news, abcnews.go.com, discovery channel website,,,,, you know, just regular sites.

The interactivity is not why I use a content management system - I use it to manage my content. When it comes to posting a new article, and including some images in that article, its difficult to beat a good editor.

Currently my blog has around 500 - 600 pages: 280 something post, about 10 pages, plus about 200 - 300 tag pages. I just could not think about managing that content with static html pages.

I also like the built in image library that wordpress offers. Once you have a few hundred images uploaded, its easy to find a related picture for an article. The editor gives you automatic thumbnail creation - just upload the image and a thumbnail is created and inserted into the article.

I have some of each, but overall prefer blogging software as a CMS (not WordPress, though).

    Alexa

What blogging software do you use as a CMS? If not Wordpress - why not?
    Purely interested out of curiousity.

If you don't have time to answer I totally understand.

Wordpress is great ... Until a bunch of your blogs get hacked and you have to spend 3 days making them all better.

I like that it is easy to use and there are a lot of cool plugins that you can't get with a handmade site, but on the other hand I like making my own sites that load a lot faster and are easier to get back up and running if anything happens to them.

I guess it really depends - if you are going to actually "blog" and post a new article every day then you'd want some sort of CMS definitely.

I love wordpress... I used to build html pages but it just got to be too much hassle for niche sites.. much easier to build a wordpress blog with content than it is to build a regular site. Plus with all the plugins it is a no brainer to me.

I had my sites as html for the longest time. It was such a hassle to update things, add things, etc. I spent more time screwing around on pages, lining things up, making things look right at all resolutions, etc. Not to mention my wife is a Graphic Designer and I would drive her bananas with updates, new ideas, etc. Every time of course it had to fit those pages, etc.

Switched over to Wordpress for my 2 main sites and can not be any happier. Many of the plug-ins are things that on an html site are just a complete chore!! Plug-ins like TubePress for someone like me who makes video shorts is an invaluable way to present my media without getting stuck making updates to each individual video page. I make some settings changes and it sweeps across the site like the Bat-signal and everything is updated a few seconds later. I'm able to have comments where I want them, use SEO tools to help speed up the process of optimization, and more. Personally it was for me the best thing I've done.

Now if only I had more time to update more than I do!!!

In terms of SEO having a simple HTML site with good information can set you apart from the crowd. Something to consider. We have plenty of clunky HTML pages out there that return us a lot of money each month.

That's a little extreme. My dad's girlfriend for example has a Barber Shop in Center City, Philadelphia. There really is no "content" needed it's just basically an online business card for people looking for a haircut in the area. I would have made her a WP site or something but she has 0 computer skill, 0 interest in updating a site, etc.

So html 5 pager it is. ransteadbarbers.com is the site. The only thing we're missing is the Google Maps link and the pics of the shop. Once I get time to drive down and visit in Philly I'll do another update and finish it off. Not everything needs to be balls out showmanship IMO, sometimes it's good to just get the point out and be done with it.

It really depends on what you want to do with it. Wordpress sites are obviously very easy to design and there are so many plugins and themes a rookie can make a great looking site very easily. However, Wordpress does not work for every kind of site.
