Question on copyrights and intellectual property of outsourced articles

I've got a couple questions about having articles outsourced.

- Is it typical for the author to retain the copyright or intellectual property rights to outsourced articles or do the rights generally come with the articles?

- If you purchase articles but don't explicitly get full rights what problems might be encountered down the road?

For warriors who outsource article writing, I'd like to hear your position on receiving copyrights and/or intellectual property rights.

Thanks,

Peace

In the United States, this is called "Work For Hire" (WFH) and the client owns the articles in every respect as though he had written them.

In the UK, this is not always the way it works, and you should specify in your order that this is a WFH contract for clarity.

Elsewhere, I honestly don't know. In general, I don't hire writers outside the US and UK, so it's never been relevant to me on the client end... and since I always provide full rights to my own clients, and specify this when it comes up, it's not relevant to me on the author end either.

Oh, and I'm not a lawyer and this isn't legal advice.

I've seen some article writing outsourcing sites that the authors retain the copyrights to the articles. As soon as I read that, I left. Make sure anyone you hire is "Work for Hire", and you have full copyrights to the work.
