Hey everyone,

I have a friend named Andy whom I have known for years that works in a computer repair shop and fixes them. Today he was talking to me about possibly wanting to create an info product either concerning virus, spyware, or malware removal, or something to do with computer repair or building.

He asked me if it was profitable to do this online. I did some keyword research and it looks pretty good except there is a lot of free info out there too. I also looked at Clickbank for him and there are a few info products out there.

Anyone here ever been in that niche or know anything about it? I really would like to help him out as he is needing to increase his income. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

    Hi,

I'm not sure that created an info product would be such a good idea, unless you can find a way for it to work. In my opinion that isn't the way to go.

When people have issues with spyware, malware, viruses, etc, they gravitate towards software.

Ever heard of MaxMySpeed.com? I've seen their commercials a few times and they are actually just promoting software as an affiliate. They are promoting this:

Anti Virus and Spyware Protection Software - Internet Security from CyberDefender.com

Maybe your friend could try it. He wouldn't be creating a product, but I assume he enjoys writing on the subject matter, so it would work.

I think the idea is fine however if it is a membership site, those members are going to be very high maintenance. Their computers are screwed and they'll figure that if they've paid their $29.99 then they are entitled to 1-on-1 hand holding.

I'd be tempted to build a free site and load it up with AdSense ads. Then, if the site doesn't answer their questions, they can click on an ad which promises them the world and your friend will get paid.

Yeah, he was actually talking about writing an ebook on the subject or something within that area. He isn't really interested in adsense or anything like that either.

And then follow each of those problems up with a really easy to understand fix, that anyone can easily understand and implement.

Rather than selling it as a guide, tell him to give it away as a freebie instead via a squeeze page.

Every single person that then opts-in will be worth to him on average $1 per month p/p/p/m.

If he gets lets say 1,000 opt-ins in his first month, developing a good relationship with his list subscribers, giving away simple little tips and tricks to keep a computer running smoothly and up to speed, without selling them constantly - more people are likely then to recommend this guy to others, who in turn will opt-in also for the same high quality and easy to understand advice.

Also, if on the opt-in form he asked for the individuals phone number along with a short description of the problem currently being experienced, he could opt to sell these leads to another national computer repair chain in exchange for a fee or expand his own business to perhaps one day, be in a position to operate his own computer repair franchise nationwide.

Either way, he'll be collecting very high value information and extremely hot leads whilst positioning himself as the person / company to go to when experiencing computer problems.

            I hope this helps.

            Best,

These are some very good ideas Mark! Thanks! I think this could be used in the future. He does want to start making some money via the internet right away, so I think this idea could be used later on.

So I got the impression that writing a guide would sell but doing what you are saying will EVENTUALLY make him more money. Please correct me if I am wrong. Thanks again!

As this is an area I am interested in, sadly I do not see much potential for a successful ebook. People tend to limp along with troubled computers until they finally quit or function VERY slowly. I worked as a PC tech for a few years and the majority of PCs which came in, it surprised me they functioned at all and were always full of junk. The record was 63,000 misc files in a Temp folder on an XP machine. With that in mind, the ebook would be hard to get to, impossible to download and difficult to read while implementing the tips or how to aspect during a crisis.

Further, if he markets the book to existing customers he may very well be cutting himself out of the equation for when they have issues. Computer repair is one of those businesses where the knowledge of the technician is guarded for job security as it should be because a computer is a sensitive and moody piece of equipment at times with hundreds of different variables which cause the same problems.

As far as selling an online informational product the best suggestion would be to lean it towards optimization, as in increase the speed of the PC following a simple process. But, like I said above a computer is usually one of those things people treat like their car, they just keep driving it until it quits and then call someone. We had many repeat customers which simply did not run the programs we put there to battle viruses and clutter, preventative maintenance is something a whole bunch of people simply do not care about.

Why not look into expanding on his current customer base, offer new services, get into the gaming side of computers or get a website up with special deals and advertise locally? If he is an established repair business in need of more income perhaps some expansion on the existing business should be the first step. Google maps and local business directories can have a very positive impact these days, as well as simple local advertising like flyers and special deals.

Mark has some very good input for you, but here is one more thing to consider...

That is the kind of product that people need, not want. It's the kind of product that won't sell too well as an "impulse" type product. In fact, most will not even look for this type of product until they already have an issue with their computer.

I had a similar situation with a database backup script I sell. It's a tool that, I feel, anyone with an on line business and is running any script with a database MUST have. But it sold like crap. I repositioned it a bit as an easy site mover, then as a PLR product.

Selling the "fear" side didn't work all that well either.

That's precisely why (to me) Mark's idea is better than simply trying to sell it outright.

Thank you all for your excellent input! I will have a talk with my friend Andy and give him a direction to go. I thought this might be the best place to find out what experience others have had here.

I also like the idea... Thinking of starting a on-line business for repair...
Here are my price and feed back would be great...

    $19.95 per month 3 month min….
Virus, run faster, everything that can be done over on-line

$29.95 Per month 6 month min… Cover your computer for failure… You ship it to us (we pay and return it fixed)
All labor is covered you just pay for parts.

$9.95 per month… on-line program--- general fix your computer auto. Done with program… It does not fix specific problems.
If you need a tune-up with this – your cost would be $24.95 for each Tune up.

    One Time Tune-up $59.95
