Wordpress.com learning curve help plz?

I built my little local SEO empire using blogspot blogs primarily because:
  • Google owns blogger.com
  • I was flat broke
  • no money for hosting
  • no computer, had to use public library

I used to have some wordpress.org blogs hosted on Godaddy shared hosting and I used to have a Host4Profit hosted domain...

but I'm startng over again from scratch.

I posted a question about wordpress.com hosted blogs, got generic answers and realized that I shoulda just started a wordpress.com blog and find out for myself.

Now I've got a question about pingback options:

Blogspot blogs don't seem to have this option so I'm clueless.

so.... this apparently means someone can "pingback" and that pingback can be either:

Spam or Good incoming link?

how does a pingback turn out to be spam?

Is this something I need to be aware of?

Any light shed will be most appreciated

    Some people with spam blogs will pull new posts from blogs that ping the services, then repost an excerpt of that post on their own blog. Probably 99% of the time, you'll see that a pingback is on a spam site. There are times, however, when it's actually on a valid site.

    To check it, just click on the link and look at the blog that did the pingback. It's easy to tell if it's a spam blog or real.

    The pingback won't hurt you, even if it is from a spam blog. It's your choice if you want to approve the comment on your side of it, though.

    If you notice spam blogs copying your posts when you use a certain tag, then you should try and put some links to other sites that you own in the top of your post. This is one way that you'll be able to use those sites to your advantage and get some extra backlinks with absolutely no work. They're not the best quality links, but it's a valid way to use those sites to benefit you.

    Pingbacks are basically trackbacks that allow you to check to see if a link has actually been provided to you.

    The need for this grew out of a tremendous amount of trackback spam that takes place where no actual link back is provided for you.

    I would check to be sure that the link is valid and from a good site. Leave it as is if you are happy with it or delete it if not. I believe that calling it spam will alert WP and the url will be added to a list of bad pingbacks somewhat like Akismet does.
