"Successful Idea?" Copycats

What is you opinions on people that copycat successful sites such as for example someone thinking to themself "Facebook seems to be popular maybe I should start a site just like that" the fact of the matter is I hear people talk about this all the time, not the people that are actually doing anything but the people that are philosophizing about starting up a website.

To take that a step further, software developers often create "Facebook Clones" and then sell the dream that "you can have your own Facebook". There is nothing wrong with dreams, but upon endeavoring to create your own new market, it is important to research the competition, and decide you you can do better. Even with a good idea, you need to understand how much money and effort are needed to compete.

You don't say..... lol no for real that is completely true some people do not have a original idea in their head and it's much easier to copy and follow then innovate and lead.

So what I am comprehending from your statement is that it's what you bring to develop on top of the platforms which can make the difference in success or failure.

This happens in many other instances, and is far from limited to just internet marketing. For ages people have been coming out with ideas, and eventually someone either rips them off, or slightly improves on the design to make even more money.

As long as you are not "copying" I don't necessarily conclude that following is a bad thing.

The phrase "You don't have to reinvent the wheel" gets thrown around quite often in entrepreneurial circles.

A wise man once told me if you want to come up with a successful idea take a pre-existing success and add value on top of it.

Where do you think the whole idea of bonuses comes from??

The Ford Model T car was designed by Childe Harold Wills and two Hungarian immigrants, Joseph A. Galamb and Eugene Farkas.

But it is Henry who figured how to build it cheaply.

What was the name of that site before Facebook, Oh yea myspace...
But it's still a social networking site

Myspace and then Facebook, they do pretty much the same thing.

And nothing says are new website can't beat facebook.

Yeah, but who is building that next fad...somebody has to, now don't they.

Innovation is rarely the work of a single individual pulling ideas out of thin air, and innovators are more often than not people who have spent a good deal of time "copying" what others were doing and then twisting, bending, prodding it until it was "original".

Whoever the hell built the model-t (read some post above mine, I can't be bothered to actually copy/paste the name...busy guy) couldn't have built it unless someone else first built a carriage, an engine, etc. And whoever invented an engine couldn't have done it without copying a piston and lever, etc, etc.
