Why Search-Volume Varies Greatly With Different Keyword Tools

I really depend on precise numbers for search volume on keywords these days. The type of keywords I am targetting sometimes have very little search volume, and sometime they have a ton.

The problem is, when I type in a keyword into Google keyword tool it might tell me that the keyword gets 2,300 searches per month. When I type that same exact keyword into Micro Niche Finder (which is what I believe more) it'll say that the keyword only gets 882 searches per month.

My dilemma is that I have been doing "local business" marketing, helping local businesses with their online presence. Some of the keywords that I look into have low search volume because they are specific to one geographic area. So when I try to analyze those keywords in Micro Niche Finder sometimes it'll say "not enough data", but if I check it in Google keyword tool it'll say 720. I REALLY need to know if that particular keyword is getting any decent amount of searches or not, and with the difference in results with these 2 tools I am really srtruggling with what keywords to target.

I am pretty sure that Google;s keyword tool gives results based on any combination of those particular words. For example, it'll say that "NY pizza place" gets the same amount of searches as "pizza place NY". But how can I find out more precise results on this stuff? Because it can really make all the difference

If anyone has a method or tool or idea that REALLy gets them great, trustworthy results, please let me know about it. Thanks very much

I think once you reach a low enough number, it becomes much "greyer" in terms of the ability for these services to accurately predict the result.

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback. That is another problem I have though too. Let's say its not a low number, lets say it gets a ton of searches per month. Which keyword tool is being accurate? If that keyword gets enough searches to be able to calculate, then which tool is giving it to me straight? Because right now it seems like either Google keyword tool is totally inflating the numbers, or Micro Niche Finder is totally underestimating the numbers. What the heck?!

you'll realize that none of the keyword tools are ever accurate. Even google keyword can be quite inaccurate.

EDIT: The only way to be accurate is to test the keywords using PPC.

Agreed. You can do test run for 5-7 days targeting global keywords but limiting the geographical area for your local target. After the test, just extrapolate how many impressions your ad gets.

I would also like to add that for local keyword strategies, I don't even estimate or bother with figuring out if I can compete or not, I just do. I always target the global keywords and by using Google Maps and fundamental location information in the business owner's website and backlinks, I just let Google figure out the rest - as to where the business is located and how it ranks for nearby search queries.

It's best to use keyword tools as a guide. I like google more than the rest but they only do their information, from what I understand. Something like 80% of the searches are through them now. It's not spot on at all, but its a guideline and once you find numbers that work for you, you will know where your boundaries are.
