Turning IM into your own business

Hi all,

I read a thread a thread a while ago about someone who decided to write their own eBook instead of promoting someone else's through Clickbank. I have only been working on the promotion of other companies products so far in my brief internet marketing career, but I have really enjoyed myself. So much that I have a tough time being motivated my regular job duties!

Right now I only make about a 1/5 of what my regular employment brings in but i've always wondered how hard it would be to start my own internet business (i.e. instead of promoting other companies products, I would purchase my own for resale). I was just wondering if there were people that have made the transition and how difficult it was to get going. I assume that you would need to find a good wholesaler, have space to work from home, etc. I also figure you would need a decent amount of start-up costs to ensure you have sufficient inventory. I was just thinking that i've learned quite a bit about SEO and perhaps it would be better to apply those techniques to your own products, rather than someone else's. But then I can see issues of low invesntory, dealing with shipping, etc being quite a bit to take on.

Anyways just curious how people have made out. Like to draw from experienced people

Thanks!

    Hi Adam,

I think you're on the right track - having your own product is the most profitable and enjoyable way to go.

Very quickly, it sounds like you could try 3 different things.

    1. Dropshipping physical products
This is where another company handles all the inventory and delivery for you. You get an order from a customer from your own website, email the order to the dropshipping company and they send the product to the customer for you.
You often don't need to buy any stock upfront, it's on a pay per sale basis.

e.g. Zippo lighters. You have a website that sells Zippo lighters, you take an order for $20, the dropshipping company charges you $10 and you get $10 profit.

    2. Private Label Physical Products.
This is where you put your own label on a product that is made by somebody else.
e.g. Vitamins. Another company makes the Vitamins, you label and sell them as your own. From what I understand you can either handle the inventory yourself or use dropshipping.

    3. Create your own info product.
This is where you research and create your own product (or get someone else to create it for you), or use private label info products.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers,

    Liam
