New Google Images means Traffic Slump?
First, the plethora of images will decrease the likelihood of your image(s) standing out. Secondly, on the first level the website url does not show up, only when you hover over the image. And when hovering over the image most people are probably satisfied and wont bother actually clicking through and thus visiting your website.
Whats worse, even if you do click through on the hovered image, you only get to see the full sized image and the website is somewhere obscured behind it...again, not good. There's not much enticement for image seekers anymore to visit your website. This is really bad!
To me its almost like Google is hijacking all images of the internet. To prove my point: Previously you could implement a script that would redirect visitors to your website when they clicked on the google cached image. Now this doesnt work anymore! I know so because I have such a redirect in place via htaccess files. The new google image system seems to bypass this now. I think this is especially bad news for site owners who have their products solely based on images (photographers, wallpapers, art etc).
Call me a crybaby, but as a webmaster and marketeer I feel cheated because google basically claims the image for itself and the real provider of the image doesnt get much credit for it anymore. There definitely isnt much of a reward for the webmaster anymore, aka people visiting your website. Am I wrong? Am I overreacting?
It will be interesting to see how the big company websites react to this change.
