It can eventually.

You will have a multitude of backlinks from the press release submissions that this will eventually help with your PR.

Submitting the press release will definitely increase PR but traffic wise its no value at all.

I have found if you publish a press release, and it depends on how many source thsy post it with you can increase your sells. You will also want to make sure you have a sign up form on your website.

  Yeah traffic isnt that great, each press release I submit gets around 200 views. Depends what website you use though. prleap is really good

The effects of press releases on the volume of your traffic will not be immediate and not drastic, but the fact that it helps your PR eventually leads to more traffic as higher PR sites/pages usually get higher rankings in the SERPs compared to lower PR ones, if all other ranking factors are more or less equal. The effects are long term.

  For direct view and mindshare (the conventional "press" sense of press releases) - not much use unless you get a really well-written press release with content that is newsworthy.
  
  For SEO - yes, it is a great tool if you submit to sources that retain and syndicate the link to your site - in my opinion (wearing my SEO hat) this is one of the strongest SEO tools if done properly.

It can totally help since press release websites are so engine friendly directories as well which could drive you more traffic around different relevant networks once they search through the keyword you're targeting. Thus, you can utilize on the free ones such as PRLog, Free-press-release, etc.
