Offliners... How I Leased My Website for $197/month... for 5 years.

Hi Warriors,

A couple of months ago I decided to test the 'offline marketing' website-leasing model...

So I chose roofers in RI....

I wasn't really getting anywhere UNTIL I put up a Google Places listing...

Then I start gettin' calls from customers.... and calling roofers to pass out the leads...

And one guy even gave me a kick back for job he got from it!! ... So I started sending out postcards and cold calling roofers....

I'd tell em "I designed a roofing site for an online class, and now people are calling me... yada, yada, yada..."

Then this one roofer guy called and said "let's talk" and basically just wanted it...
$197 and he wants it for 5 years!

Actually I think I coulda got more, but it was an "expereience."

P.S. When I changed the google map listing (and put his number on it) it
disappeared for now... which I had a feeling it might... I'll see what happens.

    Nice going!

Next time you could register a separate local # just for the web site. Then transfer that number to them per the conditions of the lease.

That's interesting that he didn't want to buy it outright.

Did he put in a clause that asked you to maintain the website or the Google ranking positions or anything?

Also, it's curious that changing the number affected its rankings. Are you sure there wasn't more to it?

I wasn't SELLING... that's what that 'leasing-model" is all about... you maintain ownership... he/she doesn't pay, then you take it back -- and resell it.

Yeah, I told him I'd maintain it... no problem.

    1. I'd black out all of your customer's details on that check. I wouldn't appreciate my name being posted on some marketing board I knew nothing about.

    2. Roofers have to be licensed with the state. Posing as a roofer to get a listing in Google local...probably not a real great idea.

I respect the effort you went to here but I think there are some serious pitfalls you haven't considered.

Yeah, you're probably right...it was kinda experimental... Some guy once told me -- come to think of it, it was on here -- "Don't worry about crackin' a few eggs to make omelets.."

get ready for a big disappointment!
i did the same thing with the hopes of getting and renting a minimum of 10 new listings a month. i got it to a science on how to quickly get service sites to the first page on the mentioned maps....

every day i would check all of my listings to be sure they all were still on the first page...and that the ones that were not yet were at least getting closer.

i had the sites in google webmaster tools so i could see the listing words that got the traffic...i had everything going right......

    then...BAM......

i wake up, check my maps account.......every one of t hem shut down...taken offf....even my own google maps listing (in which i got them to turn back on and then google turned off again)......2 full months of dedicated work shot to.....

anyway.....get ready for a let down
    i dont no what happened

Pretty nice there. I can't believe I'm saying this but after reading this, I may try and get into the offline stuff.

When Google finds any modifications made to the name or phone of "your" listing,
it will suspend it due to "quality control standards". I did the same thing as you did. Had one
of the top listings in a very competitive market and one day it was gone...

When I logged in to my account, it asked to "adjust" my account. I never bothered...

Instead, I suggest to use proxies when creating a new Google account with maps listing.
If you want to lease your system, create one good example listing and use it to show what's
    possible with your system.

Leasing Google Places might create some issues. It's not like leasing your own lead
generating site, because you're creating a fake business listing with an address.
Phone number is not a big problem, you could even use GoogleVoice for this and just
forward all calls to the end business...

Generally, it would be safer to sell your "service", if you have samples of current
placements you did for other businesses. Leasing would be great for websites.

      Yeah Thomas,

I think as GP evolves, there will be more changes and slaps, etc.

    Congrats!

Although, I would have kept it and sold the leads from it on a contract basis... you could have cleared more than $200 a month from it.

Great job, fantastic, creative and just overall good thinking, getting almost a decent car payment per month.
