How can I turn a list of 250 into 1000 quickly?

Hello all,

I've been building my list fairly slowly over the last few weeks and up to last week was at 190.

Only last week I started high profile article marketing, I upped my video marketing game, bookmarked my blog (which also has an opt in), did an email campaign to an old list, had a go at a JV Giveaway (bit of a flop) and am starting to post on facebook and twitter and have added another 60. (Also had a small flutter on PPC - just to have a go). So am now up to 250.

My game plan over the next few weeks is to focus on;

High profile article marketing
Video marketing (love it)
Facebook
Blog Marketing
Social Bookmarking sites (big ones)

I know that once I reach 1000 I can start to do adswaps etc and really go for it.

Is there anything else I can do now to accelerate from 250 to 1000 quicker?

I'm offering my list absolutely loads of content at the moment (everything I learn, they learn!) - can I use that to my advantage somehow?

P.S. I'm in the very competitive Internet Marketing niche so am focusing more on leverage than SEO.

Thanks for your help.

Jo

  • Hi Jo

It looks as if you really are starting to get some momentum. I would suggest that you do what you have already suggested in your post, and start Adswapping.

You will find that people will start swapping at the sort of levels you are at. You could also start negotiating deals with more advanced Warriors (in list building terms!) to swap with just part of their list.

Which ever way you go I wish you the best with your list building activities and I'm sure it won't be long before you are at that 1000 mark.

    All the best

Ad swaps is a good one.

Also, can you come up with something that goes viral? That's an option. Give something away to your list that is worth sharing and let them know it's free to share. See what happens.

The number of people on your list is not as important
    as their behavior:

Are they freebie seekers or are they buyers?

I'd choose a list of 100 buyers instead of a list of 1,000
freebie seekers any day of the week.

Be careful not to give away so much free stuff to your
list that you end up conditioning them to receive great
    information for free.

Focus on building a list of buyers instead.

      I agree.

The beauty of creating a list is that you can sell to them but you must be careful with the freebie seekers, they only sign up so they can receive freebies time and time again.

I always make sure I have a paid list of people who are going to keep buying from me time and time again.

Freebie seekers are dangerous and if they become addicted to freebies they will start creating special emails just for freebies, most do not still take action and then go onto the next freebie they can find.

And the danger of Adswaps is that it can piss your list off. If you constantly send them to someone else's squeeze page it will have a drastic effect on your clickthrough rate.

250 is not exactly low. If your list is responsive, you can always go for an adswap with someone with a similar list. Check out the JV Section here, there are a lot of adswap requests...

There's no reason you can't start ad swapping now. I see several people with lists under 250 looking for swaps in the JV forum.

    Jo,

If funding is not a problem, you can run a contest
and give away let's say, a $1 per lead or something.

I guarantee you'll be at 1000 at no time!

Create a free report that is highly valuable, and related to the giveaway in your autoresponder. I use articles that I have syndicated to build up traffic tomy autoresponder for this. i try to make it 15-20 pages of high quality infromation that is helpfull, yet compelling to learn more. at the end, send them to your opt in page to get more info.

Then, take this report. if you do it right, you can give it to other people in your niche to share with their list, rather than going to them and saying i want you to send your list to me, you can say, I want to help you add value to your list by giving them a free report.

if it is high quality, many people will do this, because it helps build their reputation with their own list, and is better than just a short email that tells them to get your freebie.

Also, take that report and put it up on slideshare. Link to it from youtube, facebook, and everywhere you hang out. its a totally free giveaway.

so you have free giveaway>>optin for free giveaway>> valuable emails on the same topic with product offer>>bonus to buyers>>buyer list..

Give it to the list you already have as well.

now in the head of the email where the normal disclaimers go. it should read something like

you do not have the right to alter this report in any way. however you do have the right to redistribute this report freely. please share it with your friends, family, and coworkers, or anyone else who you know may be affected by [insert problem here].

although i agree with building a list of buyers, that is part of the funnel. ignore the freebie seekers all you want. that leaves the door wide open for me to build a relationship with them and make a fortune.

Thanks Andy, I wasn't sure if people swapped with a list my size, but swapping with part of a list is a great idea!

Thanks Shaun, That's a good point and I've heard it said before, it's not just about the size of your list, it's about the quality. However i do think it's a game of numbers, the bigger the list the more chance you have of having buyers on that list, converting the freebie seekers into buyers and raising your profile.

Yes, it's a numbers game... to a point.

The key is to be building at least TWO lists right away...

A prospect list and a buyers list.

The mistake I see too many people make is giving away
valuable content for free for too long. Yes, this helps to
build the relationship but it also has the negative effect
of training your list to expect great information for free.

And then some people on your prospect list get bent out
of shape when you send a promotion.

How big is your buyers list?

Good point, I haven't tested my list yet as I haven't sold anything! I wanted to get to 500 before I started selling, but it's taking a bit longer than I originally anticipated! Do you think I should test them out, I've got the resale rights on a really nice little facebook product.

If you're going to test them out, then use an offer that's
highly related to the freebie they signed up for in the first
            place.

In your case, you have the free videos from the so-called
            gurus.

How can you turn that around into a relevant paid offer?

E.g. transcripts, action guides from the points they made,
add content to create a video course based on their tips,
            etc.

Then place an offer on your thank you page and refer
to it in your follow-up e-mails to your prospect list.

Then you get to build your prospect list and your more
            important buyers list right away.

At the moment you may be sowing the seeds of building
a big prospect list that expect great information without
            buying.

I've been building lists since November 2003 and I've made
            a lot of these mistakes.

What matters most is the behavior of your list, not just
how big it is or even how great they think you are.

Do they buy or do they not? Period.

      Hi GhWriter,

Thanks for your reply. As my entire opt in page is a free offer (I'm not selling anything yet), then I'm pretty much doing what you're saying. I'm driving people through syndicated articles, you tube, facebook etc etc all to my free offer on my opt in page.

What I haven't done yet is approach other list owners and offer it to them to send to their list and as its videos it can't be altered.

I believe in the power of a list and I believe the more people you have on board, the more buyers you'll have, the more chance you'll have of converting freebie seekers but most importantly the higher your profile will be meaning more word of mouth and even more people!!!

      Thanks again.

Use Google AdWords Display Network with banners. This way you will be able to add at least 100 per week. Create banners, put 2000 keywords in your campaign and set a price around 0,05 per click. It works great.

Also, do not stop what you are doing already. Article marketing is really powerful.

      Hi Peter,

I just wanted to let you know that I set up my display network campaign this morning, so fingers crossed it starts bringing in a bit of traffic.

I have google analytics set up to track both my leads and opt in conversions, do I need to set up the conversion tool within adwords aswell do you know?

If so, can I have that and my analytics code in the source of the page I'm tracking?

      Thanks for your help.

I would just like to also add the "guest posting". Not a lot of people are doing this because it's either they don't know how to do this or they don't even know that they can do this.

Contact blog owners in your niche and ask them if they can accept you as a guest blogger. Contact at least 10 blog owners, expect to get a yes to at least 1 blog owner if you can really provide a valuable content that will benefit his/her readers. You would be lucky if you can get a yes for 2 or 3 blog owners.

I once wrote a guest post at johnchow.com and it generated 48 comments and 23 subscribers from just 1 post alone. Do guest posting on a regular basis, at least 1-2 times a week, and you will have a steady flow of new subscribers, and the best part is, those are targeted traffic and targeted subscribers, "FOR FREE".

        Hope this helps.
That's a brilliant suggestion. Thanks very much.

    Hi guys

I have started creating a list and am upto about 270.

The niche I am targeting is overcoming Public speaking fear, so if anyone would like to do an adswap get intouch.

This list is less than a week old and has been targeted using banner ads, and costing as mentioned elsewhere in the thread around on average .03-.05p per click. So in response to the topic of this thread banner ads maybe the way to go....

I will get around to other ways of driving traffic however just had to get this thing moving.

The quickest way I grew my list in an old niche was to record and hour long audio MP3 then offer it to my list for free if they refered 3 people to my landing page.

It worked pretty well so I actually made it my verification page on initial sign up and was constantly looking to turn one sign up into 4

Congrats for taking action :-) Adswaps is probably the best bet.

My only recommendation would be to make a sub list of all your subscribers you've got from adswaps. Because SOMETIMES there are people who do adswaps 7 times/week with their list.
