Service or Software Like Animoto?

25 replies
I like the cool rock video style slideshows that animoto does, but I don't like how even if you pay them $250 a year they don't let you take their logo off. :/ Also, I'm not crazy about how they advertise that "Unlimited DVD Quality Downloads" come with the commercial membership, but then it's $5 per download? WHA...???

Does anyone know of any other software or services that produce a product like animoto? Software is preferred! I like to have things on my own machine, if possible.

Thanks!

    I'm currently developing an animoto clone..except that the user can watermark their own videos with a membership. We'll start beta testing in 3 weeks. I'll keep you posted. I also thought that was an annoying feature which is why I didn't pay for the membership.

      hey obiswill, could you keep me updated on the launch of that "clone" version? I'd be glad to test it out...
      cheers

        Hi Melanied:

        I use animoto and really like it. For $25 a year (with a $5 off code) you get a very nice product that people think you spent hours making (I'm talking about all the effects).

        My suggestion to you is to get a cheap video editing piece of software, download your video to your computer, then use the software to cut off the end where the animoto logo is. You can replace it with your own URL or whatever you want.

        Hope this helps.

          I needed something other than flash for small projects, so I looked into MediaOne, which I used and then edited the end of the movie myself.

          You may want to take a look at a couple of these...no endorsement, just a couple of ideas for you:

          * One True Media
          * RiffTrax Cuts! | RiffTrax
          * PixelFish
          * Jumpcut
          * Motion Box

            All of the above are for personal use only. I would hate to see anybody getting in trouble by using it for commercial use.

            Anything else out there for commercial use?

          I just signed onto the $30 per year option, and when I downloaded the video (mp4) I couldn't import it into camtasia studio or windows movie maker. Am I missing something here or do these programs not deal with mp4 files?

          I had to go to zamzar, convert the video to wmv, then import into camtasia. Its a pain though. I would rather not have to convert the video downloaded from animoto.

      Have you developed the animoto clone yet?

      My issue with animoto is there commercial rules. I make small promotional videos for small businesses. I need to be able to redistribute the videos I make for commercial use.

      Will yours allow commercial use?

      If Camtasia does this, I haven't seen any evidence of it. I'm talking about the specific WAY Animoto makes the videos - how it analyzes your music and does the "rock star" cuts.

      James, I PMed you back...I'm very interested to see your results!

    Why don't you just Google "video slideshows" and see what pops up. Try slideshows alone or video for websites, and see what you get.

      Yeah, I've done that - Animoto produces a very specific kind of video slideshow that's not like what you would find from RockYou or PictureTrail or Slide or anyplace like that. In fact, to even call it a "slide show" isn't really accurate. You'd have to see it.

      Animoto is special because it actually shows the pictures along with the beat of the soundtrack or music.

      However, way before they released their service, I used to use a program here:
      Showit Software for Photographers - Tools to enhance and present your photos

      Several years ago, I used to be a webmaster of this college, where we used to take graduation photos and make cool slideshows with that program above. All you do is plop the pictures in, choose a soundtrack and that's it. Here's an example:
      Columbia International University

      Best part is easy to use for anyone. Hope that helps.

        I have used muvee autoProducer and happy with the results. They have free fully functional trial.

        Right now I'm playing with Windows Live Movie Maker. Not bad for a free software. It has the 'fit to music' and 'auto movie' feature.

    Animoto is a great idea. But it's hard to see the pictures in the final video. It's just a "100 pictures per second" video that's not suitable to show anything. It may be for rock videos but superficial rock videos. There's some basic human instict that likes "100 pictures per second" changes but that's too basic, and frankly, I get a headache

    I like the oposite, videos where you can see the picture. Made my own program for that.

    Hi,

    Would love to hear from anyone that has an alternative to the Animoto service?

    Easy to use without the branding at the end!?

    The $249 is a tad expensive for just a handful of videos I want to run through...

    Does Pinnacle, Adobe (exp), Ulead, Cyberlink or others offer anything close to Animotos own?

    Don't mind investing in the software if I have too! But $249 for a service? Hmmm

    Thanks

    I also use Animoto & find it a very effective tool for video marketing campaigns.
    I have also considered using XtraNormal to create online videos (like Animoto but with funny lego-type talking characters).

    Dude, use Stupeflix as an Animoto Alternative !! it's the best slideshow program / app out there in my opinion. Or use iPhoto (if you are on a mac).
