Do directory submissions boost google rank?

So here I am submitting to blog directories all day (Top 50 Free Blog Directories)....and I notice that most of these directories require you to link back to them via a widget, button or what have you. So how effective is this method really in boosting your google rank? Sure some of these directories have a higher page rank than mine but its not like my link shows up on their homepage. And sure you get some exposure to those that peruse directories but I assume that such visitors convert rather poorly.

What do you guys say? What has been your google rank experience with directory submissions, blog or otherwise? Does it make a difference if your using a paid directory vs a free one? Thanks.

I've done all kind of directory submissions in the past and have seen very little if any results. I haven't tried all of them, but I submitted one of my links to over 100 directories by hand (PR1 - PR6) and saw absolutely no results.

I won't say they don't work since my experience is definitely limited, but I would recommend other means of backlinking before spending the time to submit to directories.

I agree. I also stay away from anyone who requires me to link back to them. There are too many other places that dont require the reciprocal linking to waste your time on people who run their business based on tactics that died 4 years ago.

Well, once I get approved from the blog directories I will probably remove the link to them again. It seems the link is primarily needed for the authentication purposes only. Im sure they would appreciate for you to keep the link but hey...I cannot afford my blogroll to get clogged up like that.

In the old days - submitting your website to all the different directories was a great way to boost your google rank...but those days are in the past... and now if you were to submit your site to all the directories it wouldn't help as much.

Thanks Ngwu, I already do a lot of backlinking via Angela and PJ packages and the results there are really good and quite fast. However, I was a hoping to get another extra boost via the directories. But I guess that wont be the case.
