Recently there is a lot of debates if Wordpress Themes are GPL, which mean the themes are free to share and modify them.

I suppose this will affect a lot of businesses that based on Wordpress themes.

If themes are GPL, will Wordpress Plugin be considered GPL as well.

If so, does that mean that preimum plugin like WishList Member (and many others) face the same fate ?

Well, the fate of WP Themes was to come under GPL,
and some excellent themes like Thesis have faced it.

I think, since the plugins are built around, or by using
the WP core, they will soon be available under GPL, too.

I'm pretty sure it just means putting a stop to encrypting PHP code.

Not that I bother but a lot of the more expensive plugins do, of course, especially if they're subscription-based.

My take on what I've read, the themes gpl, and what happened with thesis. Only the code that is using or based around the wp core code has to be gpl. So any other custom code can still be encoded, thesis is still protecting other parts of their code, which makes it harder to modify easily. If they have licensing as well, would make it hard to share without completely rewriting the encoded parts.

At some point it may go the same way with plugins, but I'm sure the premium plugins will have custom code and protect it.
