My wrists are KILLING me!? Product?

I am 27 and am in excellent health. But since i sit on the computer almost all day long I am getting REALLY sore wrists. I KNOW im just begging for carpal tunnel! Can anyone recommend a really good product that works really well. I dont care how much it costs.

    I've heard of a keyboard and mouse combo made to massage your wrist/hands when using the computer... dunno where to get it though... google it up.

    I had the same problem a couple years ago - all computer related.
    Go to the pharmacy and buy a wrist guard for carpel tunnel. Costs around $10 - $12. Its straps onto your hand and holds your hand and wrist in proper alignment. Get the type with velcro so you have better tension control. Just be careful not to get it too tight - just tight enough to hold it in place.
    It means you are going to have to adopt a little different typing style with the one hand for a while but it does work. If you have problems with both hands I would use guard only on one hand at a time as it is awkward to type while wearing it.

    When your wrist isn't sore any more take the guard off. You might find you are wearing it off and on for a few weeks but eventually your hand wrist alignment will change and strengthen as the guard helps to train your arms. It helps to wear it on non computer tasks too.

    I don't have to use mine anymore - it worked. My problem was with my right hand as that one uses the mouse as well

    Also take the advice from GeorgR. - he's correct about making sure everything is at the appropriate height. I changed that as well.

      I found a free ebook that HP made for computer ergonomics. This should be helpful to those with pain or strain while working. If you have numbness, pain, strain, etc... Read. Prevent it getting worse.

    It is an exercise glove that helps exercise those regions and helps massage and smooth out all the tendons and tendon sheaths, etc.

    I got one this summer for trigger finger that I got from playing golf and it has worked really well for me. But it wasn't an instant process. It took a few months for it to go away completely - but to be fully honest, I didn't do the treatment every time I was supposed to.

    Kensington make some really good products.

    I have a leather coated wrist rest! so cool, both on the wrists and on the desktop!

    Ergonimics are important too.

    Monitor at the right height and chair at the right height and knowing how to type with all fingers rather than stabbing at the keyboard!

    All basics........ but the wrist rest works the best.

    After that you could invest in a pilot mouse from logitech...... takes a little bit of time to get used to like (30 minutes), but no more slamming, just gentle rolling will get rid of the problems you are experiencing now.

    I hear you, Jake. I had exactly the same problem, so I bought a split-key board -- and this cured my problem. In my case, I bought a Logitech Comfort Cordless Duo (photo), but MS also make one that's corded.



    In the meantime, try rolling up a t-shirt and putting it under the edge of the keyboard that's nearest to you, so that the keyboard tilts away from you. I find that this helps.

    I too have had to deal with this. Been through all sorts of wrist supports. The best one I found and still use is a little beanbag about 6 inches long with a crescent shape on one side. Got it (them, I have several) at Office Depot or one of those places. Best solution I've found so far for mousing. Obviously, not the solution to keyboard repeat stress.

    LOL@powerballs. Fortunately i don't share your problem, then again i have a big huge desk with a lot of space for my arms to rest on it while i type. Helps my arms, back, wrists, by putting all the pressure on my forearms... just an idea, clean your desk and create a little arm space.

    When my carpal tunnel flares up I wear wrist splints for a couple of nights and take vitamin B6. It usually only takes a couple of days for the symptoms to disappear.

        As usual, great replies...

        I might add a couple...if you're in pain now, while waiting for your new keyboard, or powerball or whatever to arrive here is a tip I got from my MD a couple of years ago.

        Get a large gallon jug that is longer than it is wide. Fill it with hot water,,as hot as you can stand,,not more than that. Pour in some epson salt, soak your wrist for awhile, until the water cools off.

        What this does is open ups the blood vessels so the healing properties of the blood can do it's thing as well as relax the muscles that are contracted from over use. It was instant relief for me.

        I type a lot and play a lot of piano...

        There is so many things you can do...

        Being a Licensed Massage Therapist myself I've studied this for years.

        It's all in the details, even down to your mouse...think about this..next time you're in Office Depot or where ever notice the different mouse models. Notice that some are harder to push down (left click or right click) it's very small effect but it adds up after 2000 clicks during the day.

        I use a Logitech ball mouse with the ball in the middle. When one hand get over worked I just use the other hand, takes awhile to get used to but instant relief when you need to keep working.

        I was also looking around for like a small joystick that would be cool also. The key here is to know pain is a signal to stop what you are doing. So just do something else, approach it from another angle.

        I don't know why it works, but it does.

        My primary care physician, who also has carpal tunnel, recommended it.

          I'll 4th the Dragon Naturally Speaking idea. I was a bit skeptical of it as I've tried DNS 6 before and it wasn't quite up to par. The DNS 10 is light years ahead. Even on a fresh install without any training, it transcribed my speech very well. I only use it for dictation, not for opening menus and doing stuff a mouse normally would. It sure cuts down on a lot of typing though.

      Then all you need do is a proofread to correct typos and misinterpretations and you're done! Even MS has a free program built into their OS.

      And did you know MS Vista has a built-in sound recorder, kind of like a tape recorder? Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, then select Sound Recorder. I just found out about it.
      You and Jenn are probably right, but it takes time and energy to retrain your computer self to get things done that way. Most of us have been doing things with a keyboard for decades. I have two weeks off, and may try to check to see what others have experienced before I buy it. Additionally, the thought process is different between writing and speaking. We do not process thought output the same way.

    Here is what I use:

    It completely eliminated the pain I was getting in my right wrist from mouse usage. It can be purchased at officemax for $20 or off eBay for $9 or so.

    For the keyboard, I use an old Kensington wrist rest. They have newer ones with memory foam.

    Now my back is a different story. I recently read a story that reclining 135° is the best position for the back. I'm trying that today. I'm currently using a Moller Back Support which is semi-decent (better than the chair alone).

    Take lots of micro pauses, the serious damage comes with excessive, prolonged use. My wrists were starting to get that ache as well as my shoulders and neck, believe or not they're all connected. So for every hour your write, take 10 minutes break, you'll notice the difference.

    I usually wear a wrist band while typing. It always helps soothing the wrists. Besides, you can try using some pain relief balms and then cover them with handkerchief tightly wound around ur wrists. IT wont cost anything, and it works great for me

    1- I had a death grip on the mouse and didn't realize it

    2- An ice pack took away the pain and let my wrist heal

      Ice is the cheapest and safest anti-infalmatory.

      Note about using Ice:

      1. Use Ice after working, not before or doing work. You want your hands warm while working.

      Caution: Below the freezing point, ice takes on the temperature of the environment it is in. Example: If the ice comes from a temperature of -35 degrees, it will be -35 degrees. Much too cold for contact with skin. If in doubt, leave out or in a lunch cooler until you see signs of melting.

      2. You need only ice the area long enough so that the area feels cold to the touch. Half a minute in any one spot is usually enough.

      3. Ice the entire forearm from the wrist to the elbow and around the elbow. This does not mean you need a big ice pack. You can keep the ice moving "painting the forearm" with it.

      4. No ice? Run your wrist and forearm under cold water. Water not cold enough? Keep a bottle of water in the refrigerator and slowly pour it over your wrist and forearms - over a sink or outside.

      Bags of frozen peas or corn work well. I've heard that some people make sacks out of popcorn -- both good for freezer and microwave-- but I haven't tried it.

      5. Alternating cold and heat (comfortably hot), increases the circulation further.

      6. Ice (cold) activates your body's natural defense systems. Taking anti-inflamatory drugs inactivates your body's natural defense systems.

      7. There are a few medical conditions where icing the extremities should be avoided. If you are being treated for any condition, check with your doctor if it is okay).

    I've been dealing with this since 1996. As you can see from all the replies on this thread, a lot of people have similar problems, and there are a host of things which can help, depending on exactly why you are getting the pain and exactly where it is (CTS is not the only thing that can happen).

    For myself, the things which have worked are:
    * Trackball instead of mouse
    * ergonomic chair/desk/keyboard/monitor setup
    * Vitamin B6 (helps with nerve damage)
    * take breaks - I use RSIGuard software - and limit computer time
    * wrist warmers/wraps
    * Topical ASA cream when all else fails

    The most important thing is to take this seriously - it can semi-cripple you, believe me - and fix whatever it is in your environment or how you're working that's causing it to happen.
