New google policy... what do you think.

by Pollon
46 replies
I tried to open a blogger account, I failed... Then I tried to open a gmail account... failed again.

Why?

Google now ask for a phone number so that it can call or text you. They call this an anti spam policy.

Funny thing I don't have a cellphone or a landline. What do you think? Would you give your phone number to Google?

Even if I had one I wouldn't post it or give it over the internet. When I had a cellphone just about 10 people had the number, because I don't really like to be bothered with phone calls or to be reachable always.

What are your thoughts? Do you think Google will lose a lot of potential users?

Yes, I think some people will go elsewhere. But, google is so popular that no one may even notice.

If you're in the US, just buy a disposable pre-paid cell phone at Wal-Mart. They have a TracFone you can buy for $9.88 and it comes with 20 minutes of airtime. Plenty of time to set up a few phone verified accounts.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Just buy a new simcard and set it up each time you want to setup a google account.

Still, If all the major social 2.0 sites decide to implement this then the autospam on these sites will be reduced significantly (no more boosting your backlinks etc.)

I've had my Google account for about 5 years now, but tried to get a gmail account a few months back. STILL have yet to receive the verification phone call. I've tried redoing the sign up a few times, but it keeps asking for phone verification, but I never receive a call. Nothing unusual about my phone system at all. *shrugs*

I think that in today's day and age, anyone who does not have some kind of contact phone number is suspect.

Not saying you ARE, of course. I loathe talking on the phone too, so I hear ya on that. Just saying that the public perception is probably different than you and I think...

This is what they asked me when I cancelled my cell phone number years ago. Luckily I never needed to do an emergency call. Let's hope it never happens to me and if it does that there is a phone or a person with a phone around.

Is blogger and gmail just for business? I thought they were free : ) In the office where I work there is a phone, but you need to talk to an operator and ask her to find me. I don't receive a lot of calls.

it's nice not to be alone I know that I some point I'll probably be forced to get a phone just like they "forced" me to get one 10 years ago. But untill then I'll stay phone free as long as I can. I even save some money this way

Aweber also does phone verification. Seems a little odd, maybe,
that it took them so long to do this considering how long gmail
    has been around.

I encountered this a couple of days ago setting up a gmail account I'd only be using a little bit.

I really couldn't be bothered verifying the account at the time so I just restarted the signup process.

Lo and behold, no verification needed the second time round.

google is tightening up - however I think that it is a bad move on their part. Many people that have a gmail account do so to remain anonymous. Google does not respect anonymity anymore. My thoughts are that google is going to lose more and more market share as it has become very difficult to put up a successful campaign without burning a hole through your pocket. Yahoo and Bing are loving it! In fact, we do very little paid search on google anymore - just getting much more bang for our buck elsewhere.

I had no problem verifying by phone when they asked me to. I'd rather show I'm not a spammer and be done with it, than have my account questioned later. As for giving my phone number to Google? I don't mind it much. Plus I'm still waiting for the Google Bot to call me and talk dirty :p

I signed up to another account today. The whole phone policys rubbish though I don't like it. I can see why google finds it necessary though, so many people abuse there email system for multiple accounts. I have 5 which I actively use and kinda need all of them...Just hoping their limit of accounts to one person is 10

No way would Google loose their users as they have only used this method to curb spamming and with single phone number you can register more than 5 accounts..So i don't think there is going to be any problem to Google fans...

    I think its freakin B.S.

But there is a way around it. Go to an individual Google service such as Google webmaster tools or something and try to create an account from there, sometimes it works.

Don't you have to include your address and stuff when you set up a list? I'd be more worried about the nuts who might get your home address than worrying whether Google might give me a call.

  • They don't always prompt you to phone verify. It happens sometimes because you login with multiple accounts from the same IP address, other times it's because you created several accounts, and still other times its completely random.

So, while they do require you to phone verify your account, it's NOT a policy nor is it 100%. You may want to try clearing your cache with cc cleaner, and refreshing your ip address on your router.

Worst case, if you simply don't have a phone number or don't want to provide one, there is an option to specify your having problems and you put that "I don't have a phone number" and they will manually activate the account.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[2484022].message }}

When you give them the number, make sure you are next to the phone when you do, because Google and others have software that will automatically call you when you submit a number to them.

Crooks don't share phone numbers, while serious business people usually will consider it. That is the main reason for the policy I suspect.

It's a good move because they're getting so many fake accounts created to spam from. Nothing wrong with protecting their free services. Those email accounts do take up a ton of bandwidth and servers worldwide. It costs them a lot.

Back in 1989 I had one of the first transportable cell phones that you could
take out of your car. See the handle - it huge but I was one of the few who had one!!

Now I'm one of the few who refuse to carry one just so I can answer the same old question: Where you at? Doesn't anyone get tired of answering the phone to requests for various things people want??
Emergency? 9-1-1 Have you ever typed your phone number into Google search and see what comes up? Probably you and everywhere you've been lately - including this forum.

My number is listed as one of the Immigration offices 209-487-5091 so I put that number in Google and guess what? There I am. And people wonder why I don't answer the phone...except sometimes to tell some callers they better pack for deportation next Wednesday!!!
