My number 1 tip for Website Video Production

If you have ever struggled for words when making an website video or would like to relieve the pressure of remembering large clunks of text then this tip is for you.

I recently used it with great effect on a new video series I am creating...

The tip - A teleprompter

Yep, just like the professionals, rid yourself of the worry of remembering lines and concentrate on one of the many other things you worry about when standing in front of a camera and recording yourself. A telepromoter scrolls your words for you in large text so you can just read along! It's used by Obama all the time.

But a teleprompter does not have to cost you. Here is a link to a free teleprompter app for both Windows and Mac. I use the free Mac version and it has been more then good enough for what I need.

I set my Macbook next to the camera and read. Since my eyes are in a similar place it is hard to see I am actually using the Teleprompter.
Give it a try:

Bonus tips:

Yep - Bonus time!

1) To make your videos look professional add a animated intro. I had mine made for $5 on Fiverr and makes the videos stand out.

2) Use a headset and dragon/Macspeech software to dictate everything you would normally type from now on. It gives you practice at speaking business like, whilst you type. Regular speaking is different from presenting information, and speaking software helped me get used to speaking out loud whilst alone. (The teleprompter also helped me forget about speaking out aloud, and made it easy)

    Greetings Dee,

Thank you for your gift of the link to a free Teleprompter.

You have posted at the most opportune time for me, as I am presently working on creating videos with voice.

I agree with you that Dragon Naturally Speaking is the way to fly ... it is quite accurate and trained you to use your voice on a regular basis.

if someone is interested in buying it I suggest making a Google search, as 50% off sales are available on a regular basis ... that should keep the price to about $50 for the standard version.

Very well done, quite usable and I appreciate it very much.

    All the best ... Ron

Very intersting. I'm willing way to start a video learning site and for now I'm just gathering more and more ideas and tips.

Thank you for your number 1 tip! And as i intend to record the screen instead of myself, do you know any virtual whiteboard application that could be your number 2 tip?

    Cheers

Does anyone have any tips for arranging your monitor/telepromoter in such a way that when you record your audio, it looks as if you are starting directly into your camera? If it looks like you are reading off a screen -- even if your eyes are looking off to one side slightly -- it makes your video look really amateurish.

I found if I put the camera just above my laptop I look like im always staring at it.

Also I never use the telepromoter all the time as then it's like reading. I use it incase I forget the words and to time the speed of my speech, so I do not speak to fast or slow - so I am not looking at it all the time.

Remember in a studio the telepromoter is at one side of the camera but from that distance it is very hard to tell where the eyes are looking. It's a similar effect with ym setup.

Do they make a portable, waterproof version that I can take hiking, camping and boating?

A teleprompter might sound like a good idea, but there are video publishers out here that film in remote locations. One of my recent videos was a 30 minute boat ride one way.

Yep there are plenty. You can get ones that work for your iphone and then you buy a small piece of equipment, esentially a mirrow and magnifier which enlarges the wording for you. Very portable. Just google for it.

  • Very useful took especially as more and more programs are marketing using videos and as we are not all professional actors or voice overs this will help.
    Cool tip Dee, thanks.

Also, if you are going to use a teleprompter, make sure to only put bullet points up there. You don't want to put up every single word you're going to say because most people will start to read all of it and not sound natural. Just like blogs, you want to have a natural personality to your videos. If you are yourself, you will do better than somebody attempting to sound like a corporation.

I only partly agree. I use the entire wording on the teleprompter, but as I have rehearsed it a few times already I do not always read off the teleprompter.

I use all the wording to help me feel safe, so I never worry about wording. If you practice it enough you can make it sound natural, as you have written it. I have to admit, I have TV industry experience so am a little used to it.

But, this WORKS FOR ME, and maybe it will not work for everybody, so maybe bullet points will work for some of you too.

Yeah, since the tools are free and most people have laptops or can place a camera near a computer screen, almost everyone can benefit from this.

I use it now to simply video all the articles I write. I therefore do not need any special content but can reuse stuff I have already written - whereas normally I would have done nothing more with that content.

One of the great things about video marketing is that you can edit your own work. That means you can shoot your own work. That means you can write your own...heck you get the idea. Just never speak for more than 30 seconds at a time and you won't require a teleprompter. I use them for the occasional long-form piece, but I wouldn't advise a non-professional to do so.

But if you do, the main feature of a teleprompter is the silvered glass that sits above the laptop computer that lays down in front of the camera lens. That way you can look directly into the lens and see your script. But these gizmos are still kinda pricey.
