I had the same problem. The plugin was very clunky and resource intensive.

I found some software that works great.

S3 Browser - Amazon S3 Client for Windows. User Interface for Amazon S3. S3 Bucket Browser.

Go for the paid/pro version. Well worth the money.

It's faster than my FTP client, can do multi-thread, etc. I tried the free version for about 15 minutes, then jumped on the paid version.

It runs as fast as my broadband connection will allow.

Money well spent indeed.

I use the free Cloudberry Explorer Client (works just like an ftp client) and it is pretty easy to use.

As far as upload speed, that can vary a lot by your internet connection more than the client.

We are using S3 Bucket explorer, and it is a lot faster than the browser based versions.

I am on a fiber connection, so most things are fast for me, but I can say getting out of browser based file managers for S3 improves the speed a great deal.

If you're on a Mac I highly recommend Transit 4 from Panic. File transfer utility that supports S3 (about $34 I believe) and a punch other very cool features.

Well worth it IMO.

i think the upload speed, depends on your broadband, because it doesn't matter the software if you have a 128 kbps connection, it will be slow anyway, so if your connection is fast your upload is fast no matter what.
