Income tax and sales tax implications in Canada

I'm Canadian and my question is directed more to Canadians, but I'd like to hear from anyone who'd like to reply.

How does the tax situation work for Canadians if one is an affiliate and making money that way? What about article writing and selling to people?

I was googling for info about affiliate marketing and found an article written by a Canadian lady who got nailed by the govt. for not reporting the GST she received (this was before HST started this month) and she owed thousands of dollars. It appears she didnt know how the system works. What about paying income tax on one's earnings?
