I live in Ecuador and while I love it here there are problems staying connected to the internet. The hosting accounts go down a lot. Electrical for the city goes off also and I want to eliminate all of these problems.
I am planning on building a new house and I want to find out how to set up a sattelite connection that will stay online forever but, I don't have any idea of how to do it. I know that I will need a dish but, other than that I'm lost.
I plan on having a solar energy set up so that there is no electrical problems.
Anyone got any ideas?

You have to find a Satellite Internet Provider in your area. Usually, if they provide satellite phones, they also provide Internet access.

The caveat, you have to have what's called a, "Clear Line of Sight" from the Satellite to the dish, in order to have a steady connection or any connection at all.

If you live in a area with tall trees, high shrubbery, etc., get your dish mounted so that it clears any and all obstructions.

If not, your connection will be sporadic at best.

I live in Thailand and have the same problem with electric and constant connection. Just had our local ISP goons some how wipe out our whole areas net hookup for a period of 5 days.

      Muppets!

      Anyhow...

In the short term you could invest in a UPS (uninterruptable power supply). This has a dirty great big battery in it that will give you about 20-30 mins of power should you electric fail and also stops the power surges you get. All your kit powers up through it.

For connection woes I have the backup of an Edge powered Nokia phone and data cable plus my iPhone which can also access the edge network and allow me to connect my laptop to the net. Not lightening fast but a good fall back if your local setup is rather shoddy like here.

Dan: Thanks for the post. I already have a backup power supply (battery) and that has saved me a lot.

    Hi,

You didn't tell us what are the connectivity offers available in your country (DSL, cable, WiMax, 3G...)

A DSL connection for example should not be affected by electricity failures, because it uses the POTS line (provided you use a laptop and a USB powered modem)

Research and see if there are any phone companies there that are offering internet through mobile phones or USB Stick.
With the power, it's a good idea to install the solar energy.
Good luck with these two things!

Additiod: I have used a stick to get internet access and that works good. The problem is that when the power goes out it usually takes out the internet companies that are here in town.

I wonder how could an ISP go out of power! do you also lose your POTS line?

    @GTCRESSY,

not sure if you are aware but satelite internet will be insanely expensive ... alot of people have no idea how it actually works

If I have satelite TV - the satelite send information that my dish recieves, passes to my box and shows up on my screen ... this is pretty straight forward to understand ... This is single directional communication ... Satelite sends - box recieves ....

Satelite internet would mean that you would need a way of communicating back to the satelite (two way) - either a satelite uplink, sat phone or other medium

You will ask the browser to find a site -> signal sent up to the satelite -> replies -> and displays on your screen

Best to look at as others have suggested ADSL, cable or 3g, phone based, tethered or even dialup

I absolutely love it here. There are some minor things that still get to me but, for the most part it is one of the most wonderful countries here in South America. I've been to Brasi, Argentina and Paraguay and I am glad that I came here. Also, the cost of living is very reasonable. Anyone who wants to come to Cuenca can let me know and I will try to assist them.
