Multiple domain names or not

I currently run a successful site in Australia which I have as a .com. I was thinking of purchasing the domain name in .com.au . Is there any benefit to doing this , can I redirect traffic from the .com.au to the site I currently operate or is this frowned upon.

Thanks in Advance for any help.

If it's a successful site as of now, I'd pick them up for the brand security sake. Not sure about the redirecting, but my vote would be to recommend you pick up the other extensions.

      One word: MONOPOLY

Set up each site with a different layout, different content and different theme.

Do not interconnect the sites VIA linking unless they are on different Class C IP addresses. The sites need to appear as though they are competing against one another.

Do not monetize each site the same, (i.e., If you use Adsense on one site, DO NOT put it on the others.)

And then push to get each site ranked in the top slots in the SERPs.

    Hi,

I agree to pick up other extensions for brand security, but definitely redirect them to a unique domain, this can be done with a 301 redirect through httaccess. Having exactly the same content on multiple domains without redirecting will penalize your site ranking.

Firstly .. If you own a successful domain name purchase the other on for the security as the others have pointed out ...

If you are in the uk like i am - i type in google(dot)com and i get taken to google(dot)co.uk .. same with EBay and CNN so no i dont think it will be a penalty to your rankings if done correctly as in the 301 or php redirects as discribed in the previous comments
