Product Creation Advice Please

Hi Everyone,

I'm working on launching my first product. I'm in the research phase and am stuck on which direction to go in.

I know people tend to not mention their niches on here but I need your help so I'm spilling my guts.

I have been in the parenting and baby equipment business for many years. I currently own a store and a family resource center. Prior to that I was a social worker.

I have researched the parenting niche, baby niche and work from home niche. They all seem to have potential and I plan on attacking each one at some point.

I am leaning towards creating a product for the work from home market. After spending time with literally thousands of parents, there is a definite desire out there to not have to return to a 9-5 job.

It seems that attacking the baby niche would be better done through affiliate marketing and forums. I have already set up several affiliate sites, review sites and forums. They have only been up and running for a couple of months so I'm not making any money from these yet. I have outsourced the work involved in these so I can focus on developing a product.

So, the questions I need help with.....

Does my logic make sense?

If I go with the work from home market, should I narrow it down even further....specific to moms or parents in general?

Will I be missing out on the work from home people that aren't parents?

There are so many products already out there in this niche but the market seems big enough for me to squeeze in (and hopefully take over...lol). The trick is obviously coming up with something different. Do I attempt to create a new product or utilize other products that are already out there and create a package?

I have a list of about 3000 from my current business which I intend to utilize. Is this enough to tempt others into a JV or should I work at building the list more before approaching JVs?

I really appreciate you taking the time to read this and look forward to any and all comments.

Thanks!

You should focus on finding solutions to the problems that people in your niche are having. The more desperate and painful the problem, the easier time you'll have selling product.

If you're in the parenting niche, instead of coming out with a full blown 400 page parenting ebook, you should laser focus in on short to the point info products that provide immediate solutions to problems people are having.

An example would be how to sooth a crying baby. Come out with something like "51 Things To Do To Stop Your Baby From Crying."

Don't care if the info you are selling is available for free online, as people will gladly pay you for the convenience of putting together this resource in one place, as opposed to them having to spend what little free time they have as parents researching the net for hours putting it together themselves.

The benefits of doing these short low cost products is that they can be put together in a few hours to a few days depending on your skill.

    Hope this helps.

      HI Jacqueline,

Just like you, I'm in the product creation phase too. Perhaps taking a little time to hear what I have to say would help?

Anyway, as you have correctly put it, the work-from-home niche is huge...in fact, its so huge I wouldnt even consider it a niche, should be more of a market.

Personally, there's no point in trying to sell to everyone here. Narrow down to either Work at HOme Dad or Work At Home Mom, or if you want, create separate programs for the both categories.

Trying to sell to everyone can and will backfire on you. Stick with the parents and you'll do fine.

As for JVs, depending on who you go to, and what kind of JV partnership you are looking for, I think with a list of 3000, you'll do just fine!

      All the best!

      Regards

      Hi GR Marketing,

I find your answer to be a very helpful reminder of what we should all do.

Ye, work from home or lets say make money online is so huge. So many sub niches. GR Marketing said well, you need to find all common problems in your niche, and based on that, you create a product. You can always add more valuable stuff in, but you need to resolve their main problems.

I think you should narrow it down to moms and dads etc. You can get more sales, if you focus on both. Make money online and work from home works for both. It would be weird, if you create a product "ppc guide for moms". "article marketing for dads".

    All the best

GR Marketing.....Your point about info being available for free but people still willing to pay for it is a very good one. I find myself often asking why people would pay for something that is so readily available for free online. You're right though, it boils down to convenience.

Creating a product and launching it seems such a good way to get yourself out there. Is this possible with a product not IM related? I know the answer is yes, I'm just strugglung getting my head around it. I think that's why I was looking to focus on the work from home market. But you've reminded me that I don't have to go that route. My expertise is definitely more in the parenting area than it is IM.

    Thanks for your input.

    Mister Bryan:

Great point about trying to sell to too many and it backfiring. I agree completely. More doesn't always mean better.

    Kaz:

I agree!!! Sometimes it's the little reminders that get us back on track.

    Margo:

I've been wondering about the Dad market and how they would take to a woman giving them advise. I don't think I would be quick to take advise from a man about being a stay at home mom.....or anything related to being a woman actually. I guess the best approach would be to target parents in general if I wanted to attract the Dads.

    Thanks!

lol, what, I can't give you advice on being a woman? No offense but it made me think of the movie "As good as it gets" when the secretary girl asks Jack Nicholson how he writes romance books and seems to be so in tune with women, to which he replies "Well, I think of a man, then I take away reason and accountability" ROFL - sorry if that offends you I just got a chuckle from it and remembered that classic line.

I think it sounds as though you are right on track with your product. Targeting moms is actually a huge part of the work at home niche quite frankly but not many women seem to be the ones producing the products. Women have a certain flare and aptitude for appealing to other women with their words and choice of graphics so I think you should start there.

Having a list of 3000 will be plenty to test and track some stats to go after a JV deal with rock solid data for the potential partner to ponder. This is one detail many marketers forget, if you have some proof of conversions and real world data to support your product before approaching JV partners, those with 300,000 on their list will greatly improve your chances of hitting the big time. Even better, if you are able to find and work with a JV partner who also has a list related to your niche you will be simply golden.

Get your product up and ready to go then simply ask your subscribers for feedback along with a chance to buy the product. Perhaps even send out a few weeks worth of emails asking what they would like to see in a product, develop a simple site with a form which allows them to give you feedback. You would be surprised at how many people like to fill out those feedback forms when they are targeted visitors.

Collect as much data and interests from real people as you can, very valuable information which will lead you even further towards a successful launch.

Best of luck to you and way to go on getting out there and accomplishing what you have. A list of 3000 is pretty darn good!

Absolutely - you can target the work from home niche by taking the perspective of a mother who now wants to begin making money again without heading back into the workforce.

Having successful infoproducts in 4 different niche markets - including the work from home (sort of) market, I would suggest you really focus in on the Mom's who are ready to head back into the workforce and understand their desires.

For instance, many I know have WANTED to head back into the workforce to interact with adults and actually get a break from their kids again (any parent knows what that feels like as much as we love our kids).

The money and work is important, but equally as important are other needs they may have at that time.

So, make sure there IS a desire where you suspect one, and be clear about what is driving the desire...perhaps a listing of part-time, flex type jobs is for Mom's re-entering the workforce would be more desired - where they can have the best of both worlds...make money AND do it out of the home BUT with enough flexibility to still stay family oriented?

      Just a thought.
