Pre-testing with Subdomains

I lucked out with my current host due to the fact that they made a pretty nasty boo-boo with the server that my websites were hosted on. To compensate for this they provided me with unlimited bandwidth, unlimited subdomains, and unlimited space on my hosting account.

So, I've been pondering the question on whether or not I should test a niche/market using a subdomain of my oldest domain name (one centered around offline internet services such as web design and marketing) to save on registering domains until I've tested the market out. If it is effective I'll register a domain for the niche and just use a permanent redirect to drive all traffic to the newly registered domain. I'm also considering using this method for split testing some campaigns to see what might be most effective.

1) Has anyone used a strategy similar to this and was it effective?
2) Are there any SEO pitfalls to this method?
