Does The Extension Of The Domain Name really matter?

I have been noticing that there are alot of good keywords out there where the .com, .net, .org extensions are already taken. I know that I can use stop words but sometimes for A long tail keyword it is difficult. Does it really spell doom to use A .info domain?

This is one of those topics where seemingly half the people say the extension does matter and the other half say Ive ranked .info domains many times and it doesnt matter. I am interested to here your opinions on this?

Thanks

So far from testing, the main TLDs .com,.net,.org rank the best.

I have been trying some .us names, and have had no luck ranking them yet. The same probably goes for info names as well.

We can give our opinions, but like you said, on this thread half the people will say that it does matter, while the other half say it will not.

I personally stick to .com domains, and If they are already taken, I find another word to register - even though it takes time to find another. Im sure it is ok to use .info ones.

Others can voice whether it matters or not.

I think with low competition .info sites are fine. I have several top 10 .info's with exact domain matches with the targeted keyword. There is no doubt that .com .net and .org get ranked faster than the others.

I'm no expert on this. So please take this in the spirit that it is given.

I have recently been undertaking research into this and related SEO matters. For me this is (sadly) long overdue.

It appears that if you have your keyword, or preferably your keyword phrase in your domain name, or as your domain name, then if it is a popular searched term (phrase) then you will rank very highly on the search engine results pages (serps). The extension seems to matter little.

To capitalise on the above, your heading should, it seems, contain the same word(s)/phrase as your domain name.

I have not tested this yet, but I certainly intend to.

    Best of luck,

    Jeff.

I our view the extension doesn't matter all that much.

The reason for the push seems to be that the "experts" get paid on the .com, .net, .org and .biz whereas a $1.99 .info doesn't put anything in the coffers.

Agree with Jeff that most people looking are keying in the keyword phrase and take little notice of what comes up except its position in the SE.

if you go to almost any page in Google for any keyword you will find all sorts of weird and wonderful sets of Hieroglyphics.

Anyway, just our 2 cents worth.

      regards

As I believe, search engines see .com .net .info and many more as the same way as others. When it is a country domain such as .me or .us, they will be benefited for their local search terms such as USA for .us domains.

But the main fact we are missing here, there are millions of people out there who are not in the internet and a website to them means a DOT COM; they don't know much about a .biz .info or the new .co domains.

When they will hear about your site/ company, they will type your name.com because the fact is .com domains are universal now as it is the most oldest extensions there.

As a marketer, I would like to have .com domains for every site I own because I like to take those not so techy user too! On other case, I took a .net domain with a good keyword phrase and the term had 2,000,000 results. After 2 months, I ranked at #1 for the phrase with that .net domain. So technically, domain extension does not matters in SEO.

There are obviously gonna be exceptions to the rule. For example, there can be a .com website with really crappy information on it, while the same keyword .info website has good quality information. Google, which is getting smarter everyday, will eventually give more value to the .info than the .com. It's the logical thing for Google to do anyway, in my opinion. (I may be wrong )

I haven't found any difference with search engine rankings between domains I have with a dot info and those with a dot com. I think if you want to sell a site at a later stage it will be perceived as more valuable with a dot com; but for me if I am trying a new product in a new niche a dot info domain name is just as useful and cheaper of course.

I think it might have an impact on SERP (just from what I have picked up from forums like this one) but don't quote me on that because i don't know enough about it.
    Best wishes

How SEs perceive the extension doesn't matter.

However, how humans perceive it is very important. After all your final target is humans so try to be as human friendly as possible; .com is unconsiously anchored in the head of all of us.

By getting a .com you put the odds in your favor.

    Google on the bolded terms...

This does beg the question, have you ever searched for info on Noam Chomsky? How about regular expressions, roman coins or craft ideas? Maybe you've never needed to do some research to find out if New York was a sanctuary city or to find out something about New York transit. Oh, and have you thought about moving your money to a local bank before you go shopping on Black Friday?
