Help for someone new?

I was wondering if I can get any tips from you guys. I haven't been on the forum long just been taking information in. I've read plently of ebooks to try and get me started but I'm still not too sure what direction to take. The only real thing I can do is jump straight in but I can't really afford to pay out money at the moment so wanted to try and get stuff done without any costs upfront. This is only for the moment though.

I'm not a natural marketer so I think this is putting me off a little. I do know my way round computers and the internet though. I've currently got a blog running which I plan to put useful tips in for people. However, I can't do much before I make some money of my own and can test different things out.

So any advise you can give me would be great

I think you've mad a good start by joining this forum. I'm relatively new to IM and have found the Chris Farrell membership site to be good. Plenty of free stuff initially too.

    Welcome to WF!

It depends on which side of internet marketing you want to go into, there are quite a few directions you can go in but the important thing is to stick at one as many IMers more experianced than myself will tell you.

There is affiliate marketing to begin with, you need to find a keyword that you can use then sell other peoples things and you get a cut of the profit for every sale you make. There is an example of an affiliate site of my own here

    Parental Control Online For Windows

You can use things like clickbank, Google Keywords Tool and Microsofts Own Commercial Intention to find a range of interesting niches to go into.

A general rule is that you want less than 25,000 websites when searching for the exact phrase (using "") and more than 3000 views per month in the google keyword tool.

The next thing you could go into is article writing, brighthub will pay you $10 per article you write in the editors channels and give you a bonus for the amount of views you get.

You could also offer freelance work on the Warriors For Hire section of the forum.

To see a wealth of information (it helped me get started!) the War Room is certainly worth signing up for if you have the money ($37 i believe)

If you need any help at all feel free to write a message on my visitor wall in my profile with your email (use [at] instead of @) and we can discuss more

Thanks for that guys, I love how active this forum is

I wanted to try the affiliate marketing side of things, but seeing as I have experience in webdeisgn and programming I'm not sure this is the smartest thing to do.

The general direction for my blog was to provide people with information on getting started online, by documenting what I do and give tips on traffic generation techniques etc recommend free ebooks for people, then eventually write a book of my own or get a PLR one and start an opt-in and the rest is straight forward. The main reason I'm starting it now so it is easy to document what is happening now and I'm trying to avoid the sandbox and if I hit it hopefully it won't matter too much as I'll be out before the site would be making me money anyway.

Hey Burton, a lot has been said here already and most of it is correct, so just find a direction you like and take MASSIVE ACTION!

When you smell blood in the water, don't stop biting until you're a millionaire!

Okay, that was a little brutal, but the message is still important. Find something that converts for you, and ramp up your traffic like CRAZY!

My one word of advice is avoid the IM niche for as long as you can. People in the IM niche are looking for someone who makes more money than they do. Once you become one of these people, you can get some respect in IM. Until then, I would recommend sticking to a smaller, more localized niche that a newbie like you can dominate more easily.

Better to be a big fish in a small pond than a small fish in a big pond!

      Hope that helps!

Look there is plenty of great info on this forum by doing a search. Just you may find specific information condensed and quicker to understand in a tutorial format. When I first got started way way back, i read forums but I did fork out for some info and it was helpful, some was unhelpful but I was very picky about what I bought. A lot is learned though by doing

    Welcome to WF!!

You have received some great advice already. This is an amazing forum as long as you stay on task. I have found it much to easy to ask a question or read a question that I have had in the past and all the sudden I am 2 hours into something I should not be wasting my time on...FOCUS.

You will find plenty of information on here that is FREE and you really do not need to pay for some of the best knowledge! So don't give into the "dark side" of thinking that you need money.
    Pick your target
Set your goals (Be Specific, Write them down, post them on your wall in your office)
    Maintain Focus
Find a Mentor (look on WF for others with your skill set but more experience and PM them, ask them question about everything)
    Get what you want

    One final thought...NEVER QUIT...Congrats!

Hi Burton. I have been where you are and I know it can be frustrating. One thing I noticed right off the bat is you seem to have a lacking faith in yourself and your skills because you are a newbie. Stop now! You are off to a good start! You have a blog up which is more than most get.

Perseverance is key as well as frame of mind. You have to start believing in yourself FIRST! You can do anything you set your mind to...work on changing the I'm not - I can't statements to I can - I will Trust me it changes the landscape both mentally and in how other perceive you.

Keep up the good work, do more research. There is A LOT of good quality free info out there that can assist you. If you PM me I'll give you some insight.

Keep up the hard work-you'll get there. Remember - You can't build a reputation on what you are going to do. Henry Ford

Hi, like the others said, if you're unsure about yourself you could always pick a niche and promote someone else's product as an affiliate. Buy the product and review it then tell others 'how it is' with your honest opinion. You could review web creation software/sites as you say you have experience there.

Just be yourself, that is what's lacking on the internet.

    Hi!

Hmmm... you mentioned you have programming skills and experience,

and from what you said: you want to focus on helping people start their own online businesses and Internet marketing ventures...

Plus, you would want to limit your finance investment to a bare minimum...

I recommend developing software useful for people without knowledge, skills and experience in building and running online businesses.

If you have PHP, JavaScript, AJAX, Web dev't (HTML, CSS) and graphics design skills, I'm sure you can develop easy to use software wich can:

    1) automatically build WP sites and blogs, PHPBB free forums and paid membership forums, ecommerce portals and custom ecommerce PHP sites with themes/templates of their choice, just like this proprietary Web Builder Tool of ours which we're debugging;

    2) easily help them in their keyword and competition research, much like our Keyword and Competition Researcher Tool;

    3) offer them a more inexpensive alternative to Copyscape, just like our Duplicate Content Checker Tool; and

    4) easily start article marketing campaigns, like our Article Spinner/Submitter Tool, which we're currently redeveloping with a wizard interface.

Then, you could offer access to the tools you develop along with necessary documentation like easy to follow ebook and video manuals for a monthly membership subscription fee.

    Hope this helps.

Signup for a free autoresponder, then add a web form on your blog's sidebar. That will help you build a list. You can see mine if you visit my blog.

A free autoresponder is never a good idea, if it goes down, or you reach your "limit" you have lost all of your opt-in's. An autoresponder is one of these things you either program yourself, use a plugin (there are many on WP) or buy one.

I use Aweber for my autoresponder, but I was saying if your on a limited budget a free one might work. I do agree with you though, you would risk loosing your opt-in list.

  • Burton, as you have already noticed OPINIONS aren't scarce here. Everyone has their two cents to add and most importantly their knowledge to share. I was going to recommend that you start by joining affiliate or referral programs but it seems to me from your second post that you have already discarded that.

Now, you can go ahead and listen to everyone in the forum and then run around like a chicken without a head because you are just as (or worse) lost as you were to begin with. Or you can set everything into a plan. Where you want to go? What is your primary goal? How can you achieve this goal? What resources do you have immediately available that can help you achieve your goal? These are some of the questions you should try to answer yourself.

There is one thing I have learned from my IMer husband and that is, everyone has their own level of success and what they consider successful. This means that making money online is not the exception to the rule.

Finally, if it helps at all, there are tons of freelancing sites which are free to join. These have employers and freelancers alike. You can perhaps find a few projects designing sites for other webmasters and get paid for it. Do this until you build a reputation and enough money to establish your own site and promote it. That is how I started out. But beware, there are a lot of third world country freelancers short selling themselves. Do not do it. Bid the price you think your work is worth, and when you win the project back up the bid with excellent work!

Good Luck and to your level of Success!
    Dana

Thanks for all the replies, a lot to take in!

Sorry I'm not an article write

I know in my second post it sounded like I had disregarded affiliate marketing but I think I would feel most comfortable doing this.

I love the sound of creating software to simplify things but I don't think I just jump straight in and do that. I know everyone says focus in one area but I would like to try and do some affiliate marketing for a while, this will give me more of a feel for what tools would be needed. Then later down the line switch to developing software or try and do both.

I think my plan would have to be:

Research niches and find 3 products in different niches.
Build a blog for each niche (blogger for the moment, not as good I know)
Post articles to a few of the big article sites, which have been optimized for 1 or 2 keywords.
Eventually upgrade my current hosting package, buy domains and port the site over to the new one with proper redirects.
And repeat (but missing out setting it up on blogger)

Does this sound like a good plan to you guys?

      [edit]
I remember what I wanted to ask. When submitting articles do you set up different accounts for each niche? and what would be in the blog and what would be in the articles. The blog a review of the product and the articles useful tips in the area of the niche?
