Hi everyone,

I'm looking into buying a domain and hosting for it.

I want to be able to run the website using WordPress.

I've looked at domains on Network Solutions and GoDaddy, I've had a domain I'd like but it's a .net, will this affect me negatively?

Any input at all on domains, hosting and wordpress would really help.

Thanks,
Matt

    Hi Rough Outline Writing,

Hosting - Hostgator accounts use Cpanel which has fantastico which allows Wordpress installs easily in a few clicks, without having to manually create a database (which is easy, but not if you're new to it).

I use Hostgator exclusively and recommend them.

Domains - I use GoDaddy and NameCheap but much prefer NameCheap. I've had a good few hundred domains on there for many years.

dot net - there may be slight negatives in comparison with a dot com, mainly due to customer perception, but there's nothing inherently wrong with dot net (EG problogger.net)

If you can get dot com instead, do so.

    That's the short, quick answer.

I would recommend to use NameCheap.com. It is really good, and you will find that most of the marketers are using it.

Regarding the hosting, I am using GVO, as it offers a big range of tools for me.

Regarding the domain name, it is not a problem, although .org would be the best for new website.

      Hi Rough Outline Writing,

.org would be the best for new website.
I disagree with the above quote. People use .orgs in IM mainly because they want a keyword stuffed domain and the better TLDs have gone (like dot com) - .org is 'officially' for charitable organisations.

But I'm open to Peter explaining why a .org is better than a .com for a new website?

Regarding other posts about cheap hosting, Hostgator is pretty cheap too, but the vast amount of us who use them and have thoroughly tested their customer support is what makes the difference.

There are hundreds of other slightly cheaper hosts, but they are awful - my advice is don't even go there. Yes, this is based on experience.

But I'm open to others explaining why a cheaper host is better than Hostgator?

I don't usually advise 'following the herd', but when it comes to Hostgator, there's safety in numbers (specifically, for the type of website you stated that you require).

For a handful of websites, their small 'baby' type accounts are adequate. I mainly use the reseller accounts myself, because I tend to host about 50 websites on each and also put my clients' websites on them, so I like having a Cpanel for each domain (rather than addon domains), plus other reasons.

Go with Hostgator to get started...

But DON'T do like most people and then just forget about hosting for the rest of your IM career. Put a note in your calendar to review things in six months. If by that time you're getting good search engine results and good traffic and you think you're ready to hit the big time...

then consider upgrading to high-performance (usually VPS) hosting. Hostagor has good VPS plans but don't be afraid of switching if you have to.

VPS means "virtual private server" and it means your site is no longer on a server shared with 1000s of others. So-called shared traffic servers have a tendency to slow down (sometimes dramatically) at peak traffic times. Mine got so bad that I was actually losing business because visitors hate to wait more than a few seconds for a page to open.

Google is also valuing fast site response and will reward you for it. When I switched to VPS my site instantly went up in the search positions. It's worth every penny.

So keep it in mind for the future.

2 quality services, Domain & Hosting At one company is really interesting to find out. Hostgator provides a great variety of services, Godaddy has its own advantages, enom & namecheap are at their best.

The main concern to choose both of them from the same service provider is what you are looking for, is your requirement gets completed or not, whether the support satisfies you or they are just a time wastage.

I have chosen Google for sometime in hosting & its great one.

First thing you must know your requirements.
After this compare the best hosting & domain companies and choose what fits your needs.
I have done like this every time and for me it's the best solution.
    Good luck!

I use Bluehost and they're pretty good. Support has been good the few times that I've really needed them. I didn't really shop around and can't remember why I chose them but I have no complaints.

A .com domain is typically the best just from the fact that non-internet savy readers won't be put off by the .com but I do have an old .info domain that still ranks pretty high.

I know that I read a transcript from someone at Google who said that it doesn't really matter and that you won't be penalized if you have a .info or a .net or whatever. As I was searching for the article though I found more info that said that you would never get a .info domain ranked...go figure?! All I know is that my old .info is hanging in there without me doing a dang thing to it!
