First page on google and now I'm really confused!?

Hi fellow warriors,

I've worked hard to get a small amazon niche site to get to the first page of google (usually position six) and the keyword I am targetting gets 49500 global searches and 33,000 local searches. I'm also No. 1 on Yahoo.

What is confusing me is that I am only getting about 3 visitors a day!

Could anybody shed any light on why this might be?

I would appreciate any feedback that any of you might have.

Kind regards

Chris

To be honest with you, I have somewhat given up with SEO rankings for this reason. Google's numbers can be sketchy and I hate working hard for a ranking that doesn't get me a lot of traffic, or in the very least, SUPER RELEVANT traffic that converts like crazy.

I only target keywords that are on the edge of buying something or taking action. Other than that, I go for referral traffic as it gives me the opportunity to build a relationship and interact with other people, allowing them to see what I have to offer on my main site.

Can you explain what you mean about keywords that are "on the edge of buying something or taking action"? I'm in the midst of doing keyword research and found your phrasing very interesting. Willing to give an example????

        Thanks.

I will assume that instead of targeting a keyword like "dog collars" a keyword that will be regarded as "taking action" will be " buy dog collars"

You have posted this in the wrong section of the forum however, the search volume you quoted, is that broad, phrase or exact. The numbers that you get from keyword tools are unreliable and there are no guarantees that the numbers are right. Conversely a phrase with no search data may get thousands of searches a month. If I was you I would focus on more keywords as well as your primary and your traffic should grow over time.

    Good luck

      Hi Dave,

      Thanks for your input.

The search terms I quoted are for broad match.

For exact match the figures are 5400 global and 4400 local (US)

      regards

      Chris

I am number 6 for a keyword that gets 500,000 local searches and I only get about 3 visitors per day so dont feel bad. You need to target terms that get over 1 million searches per month and you should be within the top 3 to see any real traffic.

    1. Google is personalizing searches meaning that it predicts which sites you might be interested in based on your browsing habits even if you're not signed into Google... make sure at the very least you clear your cache before searching. That may not help, I've heard a lot of conflicting info but it's a start.

    2. Perhaps Google's numbers are off (that seems REALLY off though).

    3. Sixth seems just far enough down so that many people will not look at it.

If you have a little cash, you might want to try running an Adwords campaign for a week and seeing how many clicks you get. If suddenly you're getting 100+ clicks a day then you can rule out #2.

If you go on another computer you may be able to rule out #1. You could also tell a friend or someone on WF they might be able to tell you if it's ranking at #6 on their computer.

Can't explain the Yahoo factor but perhaps people just aren't searching on Yahoo for that term very much.

No need to go that far. Just go to proxify.com and proxify google.com. Thereafter do a search for your keyword(s) and the results given will not be based on any historical search data.

But I do suspect your monthly local searches for your keyword are "broad"

If it is not then Google data is flawed!

You should look to drive traffic to your site using other traffic sources and focus on other keywords in your niche.

If you look in Google's Webmaster tools it will tell you your SERP, the amount of Impressions your listing gets, plus actual clicks for each keyword you rank for.
Have you looked at this to see what the true search is doing plus what your ctr is?

    yes, I am....

Other people may disagree with me on this but I have found Webmaster Tools to be extraordinarily inaccurate. That's just me though, YMMV.

People are usually on the edge of buying something when they are searching by specific product name + review or comments about the product. They just need that extra assurance that what they want to buy, has worked for other people with positive results.

  • what web browser are you using? Some webs browser automatically set the search results to pages that interest you most!

Just because you are seeing your page #1 on yahoo and #6 on google could only mean that your website is only viewable on your IP address.

Which means your browser has some how remember your website and is bringing it up every time you search for it.

hope that made it all clear. It has happened to me before!

The best way to get your website listed by every major search engine globally is to add something to it that search engines constantly look for when crawling.

    I use an Attracta Badge.

You can get your own for free go to attracta . com

Once the major search engines re crawl your website with an attracta badge installed you will almost see top rankings in 24hrs.

    hope that helps!

To everyone else that has replied, thank you for your input.

If google's resources do provide such sketchy data, and I know most keyword tools are based on google data, then it makes a mockery of a lot of IM strategies that target specific keywords.

I'm feeling a bit deflated now! Have I really been wasting my time?!

    regards

Welcome to Google's world, where everything is controlled by the big G. I've tried my hand with SEO for a long time now, and even though I found success with it to a great extent, there have been times when I worked hard and gained nothing just like you. Why don't you try out PPC?

For what it's worth, I've seen this for a lot of my keywords and have adopted more of a long tail approach.
