hi,

i am looking for a cheap place to buy domain names...
i found 1and1...

but when i was about to order, they say subdomain limit is 5...

i have websites where i have more than 5 ADDON domain names...

so if i have more than 5 addon domain names, would i be able to
use 1and1 (who offer subdomain limit of 5)...

i tried asking customer support but they dont understand it seems like

thanks
BJ

I think you are confusing the domain seller portion of 1and1 with the hosting. When you register a domain, you just register it - nothing about subdomains there.

Be certain you are choosing only domain registration and not a hosting package with domain registration.

i am only trying to transfer domain name (not hosting) but they force you to choose one...i think one of them is $0 per month...the non hosting option but it still says 5 subdomains...so that just didn't sounnd good...

i like namecheap but they dont have automatic renewal from credit card which is a bummer because i dont want to keep adding funds...

    any other solutions?

If you want automatic renewal, GoDaddy has that function, you just would not want to use their hosting services.

For the best prices on domain names with GoDaddy, here is a useful link:

Totally agreed, you can go to retailmenot.com and get a coupon for 20-30% off godaddy.com stuff. I always do that when I make a purchase or renewal

Google 1and1 scam before doing business buying domains or anything really with 1&1.

    1and1 Scam! - Discuss Anything

Never register domains or ANY service from 1and1. I repeat... never REGISTER ANYTHING from 1and1. Read the the story below for more info.

It was about a year or so ago when I registered 3 .com domain names from 1and1. I rarely used the domains, but anyhow the time came when I could either renew it or let them expire. I decided to let them expire and I thought that was the end of it. About one week ago, I get a call from a debt collection agency saying I owe 65 dollars to 1and1 from lack of payment for the domains. I thought that this was ridiculous until I found out that with 1and1 you CANNOT just let the domains expire. You have to do this whole process of canceling the domains, ect that includes a fax by you, ect. Nonetheless, I owe 1and1 65 dollars for domains I don't want.

Bottom line, don't buy ANYTHING from 1and1. Just search google for "1and1 scam" to read stories far worse than this one.

At one time I have just under 30 domains with 1&1. If you don't want to renew them you must do a song-and-dance in order to cancel the renewal.
Even the URL for cancellation is difficult to find! Then you must request cancel...then confirm through email prior to getting this done.

I also am playing the game with the collection agency....when these domains did not get canceled I attempted to pay direct to 1&1 through Paypal...no dice. They left the payment notification untouched for over a month, and now want the renewal PLUS late fees, etc!

Only way to pay them is with a billing agreement and then you are open to their taking your $$$ if you miss a step with them.

I have moved all but four domains out now and will move them one month prior to renewal.

      1&1---NO WAY! NO MORE!!

Run from them as far as you can! And I mean now.

Don't ever do business with them. I used to be member in another (not IM) forum for years and all I heard was horror stories. Don't register with them, don't host with them, just keep yourself away. Far away...

I agree to stay away from 1 and 1 hosting. I have used them in the past. I used them the first time I ever made a website because they had cheap hosting. They canceled my domain for no reason, claiming that I did not pay. (Even though I am 100% sure that I did pay). I contacted them several times, to no avail. They then wanted me to pay them again to get my domain back, which I had to wait for months after our back and forth emails.

But, it was too late. All my traffic was gone and I just wasted more money.

And that kids, is the story of me losing my first domain

So, as the previous poster said, stay away. I cannot emphasize that enough. Thanks for reading my little rant

That complaints sound like someone who doesn't understand auto-renew. With 1and1 you have to cancel your auto-renew if you want a domain to expire. You can't just ignore the bills to "let it expire" - but that's what some do.

It's the opposite problem of people who complain "my registrar didn't tell me my domain was expiring" - YOU registered the domain...it's your responsibility to either cancel auto-renew or remember to renew.

I don't recommend 1&1 now for a few reasons connected with transferring domains from one person to another. However, I've a number of domains registered there without problems for several years.

It goes way beyond auto-renew from the sounds of many complaints. They make it difficult to NOT renew it and then when it's renewed against your wishes, they send it to a collection agency for non-payment. It's almost like a forced continuity on domains.

There's just way too many complaints about this company to ignore.

I never leave my domains on auto-renew and I never have a problem getting them renewed. My registrars give me numerous notifications and if I want to let the domain go, I just don't renew. Nothing else to do. That's the way it should work.

I like auto-renew - one less thing to worry about every month. I admit, though, I've kept a couple domains a year longer than I planned...but it was my fault.

With 1and1 you do have to understand the process or it will mess you up.

You go to their cancel site subdomain and chose what to remove from auto-renew....they send you a message to confirm and you click a link.

It really isn't that hard - but some people just don't take care of the details.

I don't really recommend 1and1 but I got some of my domains there years ago and so I just leave them there.
