What are the differences between a blog and a website? I understand that blogs are better at pulling traffic. Is this true?

What are the differences between a Toyota and an automobile? I understand that Toyotas need less maintenance. Is this true?

"The Golden Town is the Golden Town no longer. They have sold their pillars for brass and their temples for money, they have made coins out of their golden doors. It is become a dark town full of trouble, there is no ease in its streets, beauty has left it and the old songs are gone." - Lord Dunsany, The Messengers

There is no difference really...a blog is a web site. It's just that blogs are, by nature, very appealing to search engines and visitors because they're (usually) updated often, easy to follow, and are structured well for SEs.

I used to make a lot of static html sites. I prefer blogs now. They easy to build, easy to design, easy to post new content regularly. Google likes fresh content and that might be the only real difference between a static site and a blog ... bloggers normally update more frequently ...

Blogs when used without revision will post their posts in reverse chronological order, where as html based sites you build the front page, and every page after that goes into the back end somewhere and is not displayed on front.

Blogging software today allows you to create a site that can display the same as an html site.

There really isn't much difference today between the two - except the way content is added and created. One of the advantages to wordpress for example is that it has a built in backend with a WYSIWYG editor making the adding of information easy for the person who is not familiar with html.

And there are other Content Management systems - such as Joomla! that allow you to manage the back end of a site the same way you would as wordpress (although Joomla! can be a bit more complicated with it's options).

The difference between the two are becoming more obscure all the time. However, "Blog" is the short form of what used to be called "Web Log" In other words, an online journal.

Now, of course, they are far more than that. But a blog still is just a type of website.
