I was going through one of my newer niche sites the other day and I noticed that my newsletter sign up conversion rate was extremely low compared to all my other sites. It has averaged about 6% this past month...that's horrible. I'm used to 30-50% sign up rates..at least from the squeeze pages.

Anyways, I have been trying to remedy the problem all week. I first took a close look at my content that was pulling them in. It seemed great. I tried a few new action calls that were some what over the top, but I knew would increase sign up rate. Changed that and there wasn't much difference...I didn't like the calls to action anyways because they came across too much as salesy and that's not my style.

Next, I tried a split test on my squeeze page...one offered only a free ebook...one offered it only in video form, and one offered both. I even split the video form in half so they could get 3 of the videos right off the bat without sign up then the last 2 after they give the email. Signups went up about 4% after I offered the videos.

They actually dropped when I offered both ebooks and videos. Maybe a sign of what people think of free ebooks after they have been bashed in their face for the past couple years. This is a targeted niche that doesn't see many digital products.

Well, going from 6% to 10% sign up rate was still not what I had in mind...so I threw a hail mary and split test 4 border colors of my squeeze page. That's right border colors...one red, one green, one blue, and one orange. Red, orange, and blue all did nothing...BUT green converted 20% more signups!!!!!!!!

A 2 pixel line around my squeeze page more than tripled the amount of daily signups. I was amazed.

I have always been a huge believer in testing everything and something everyday...as long as you have the traffic coming for quality results. But, I've never seen such an increase in conversions from a line drawn around the page.

I am off to test all my borders now.

There is psychology involved with the way we perceive colors, and the effect different color schemes have on our actions. I think I may have mentioned this a while back somewhere on this forum, but the Yellow Pages are yellow because someone figured out that we retain more information when presented with black text on a yellow background.

    Good job on testing!

Its funny you say that... I had almost the same thing happen... I created another version of one of my sites that I used to test on with media buys and PPC... We changed the border by mistake - and optins went up 10%... Its crazy.
