Its 5:21am, Calling all Night Owls

Hey All,

Depending on what part of the world you are at the moment, I just wanted to quick shout out to my fellow night owl warriors. I'm in the U.K and its 5:22 am and I have just taken a break of actual 'work'.

If you are in the U.S I'm certain its late there too. If you are still up, I want to ask you something. Why work at nights?

I mean for me, I change my body clock pretty much every week. Right now, I'm online cos I've been creating videos and rendering them and its quite at night, I sorted a few skype consultations with my clients too.

What do you do at nights? particularly actual work? does it increase productivity? do you interact with people from other parts of the world and that is why stay up late? or just lurk around forums and websites and check mail and wonder why your 'work' isn't paying off?

I'd have posted this in the off topic forum, but its not really an off topic OP cos I want to find out why you chose to work at night on your internet business and if its any better than working at day time. If its productive and efficient, it will help other warriors to sort their working times out.

If its more of a ramble, than my apologies, my brain doesn't fully function when it gets close to bed times :d

So Maddi, it's not just FNC that keeps you up late, is it? LOL.

I'm having trouble sleeping otherwise I would be in bed right now. Years ago, I was a night owl but many years of getting up to see children off to school broke me of that habit.

Usually I'm asleep by 9:00pm. I also usually stop working online about 3:00pm or so.

I wake up around 4:30am, take a hour and a half walk along the river at about 5:30am. Get home and work two or three hours. Have a TV lunch break. Do some hommy chores, then work a few hours more.

      I love this life online.

Why am I up now? Um... well, once in a while I have too much energy to sleep.

I've always been sort of a night owl but most of my IM work gets done at night because of my full time job. I actually find late nights are quieter and I can actually get more done. I also live alone so I guess that often I don't realize how tired I really am! I've dozed off in the middle of writing things and been unable to make sense of them in the morning.

Hah well, I'm in Australia and the time is a little different =P

But talking about why I work at night for my business. Sometimes I something I must do (like update my wordpress plugins or submit to directories); a task that I've set myself to do. I want to do this all before I sleep but sometimes it takes longer than I thought it would take and I end up being awake till 5 or 6 am.

When I work at night it is so that I can finish things, but not only finish things, I also work for the enjoyment of learning.

If I start something and I am enjoying it then I just continue. I find that if I go to sleep around 3 in the morning I am good to go at 7:30 again.

Until I recently started working with a local business during their regular biz hours, I really would work all through the night until the sun came up.

First, in Vegas, it is way too HOT to do anything during the day, so I would just sleep through the heat.

Also late at night there is less chaos and noise and interruptions going on so I could focus on "work" and accomplish quite a bit.

Ii do some dealings with the European crowd so that would also allow me instant communications with them instead of waiting an extra 12 hours for a response.

My schedule got really weird for a while and I think that wasn't good for the health, so I am kind of glad I am back on a somewhat normal sleep schedule. We shall see how long it lasts.

I am an incurable insomniac and workaholic (okay, I really haven't tried to really cure it yet) and work on my laptop until I pass out 7 days a week. It used to be an issue of bravado that no one who worked for me could outwork me. But I just turned 40 and I want to start taking better care of myself. So I'm looking to change my night owl ways.

For me I work around the clock! We have clients all over the world so my partner and I make ourselves available from noon to 3-4am est. and our admin is on the morning shifts! I find it easy to get everything done at night cause the kids are sleeping! With 5 kids in the house and my office in the house it makes it hard to get anything done without breaking my concentration.

I've been fighting a losing battle with trying to maintain a 'normal'
work schedule. You know, write and work on projects during the
    day.

I'm also more than a bit of a workaholic. I did 16-18 days just about
7 days a week from mid Feb until about June. That's when I fizzled.
I could hardly do anything for close to two weeks.

But I cannot deny that I love writing late at night. It's quiet where I
live to begin with. But late at night is morgue quiet. lol

I love writing from roughly early evening until maybe 3 or 4 AM. Then
my brain is too buzzed to go to sleep. I'm whacked half the time. The
thing I noticed is that my writing just flows at night. During the day,
    not as much flow.

Well put, Ken, and I agree. I'm not sure why it works this way but it does. I still work a full time job so falling into this routine (especially on the weekends) does mess me up come Monday morning. My secret shame is my afternoon nap on Saturdays and Sundays!

LOL. No shame, dude. No shame. When you're out of petrol, you're just out.

Wanna hear my hilarious secret shame? Hardly believe I'm gonna say it. In that
two weeks, I mentioned, when I was so burnt out. There were times when I
could not keep my eyes open even after getting what I thought was enough
        sleep.

So, lol, it got so bad that I would just roll out of my chair, onto the floor, and
pass out for an hour. My cats would come over and lay down next to me, and
all four of us would take an afternoon nap. LOL

My late night work fests are over, being asleep and being productive don't mix. I'm off to sleep at 11 and wake up at 7 and work till 9pm (taking breaks in between of course)

Maybe that is the key to why I AM so productive at these hours! Perhaps being tired does something to my brain that allows me to think more lucidly. I don't know...just thinking out loud here but maybe there is a part of my conscious mind that is handicapped that allows the creative juices to flow and the thoughts and ideas to come more easily?

I like working at night because it's the one time that I don't get any interruptions and can spend a block of time concentration on a project. That way I get lots done in a shorter period of time
