Do You Want To Date My Avatar?

My husband showed this to me, and asked me to figure out how WE could do this..

It's too hilarious, but there's a marketing lesson here.

these guys made like 3 seasons of 5 minute Youtube videos about 'gamers' (wow gamers) and they were making BANK with YT's partner program... now they've been picked up by Netflix and more...

Open discusssion now.

      Caleb,
I know.. when I saw MMO... I asked my husband what it meant...

It has a different meaning for gamers than it does to us, but...

I think it works either way. LOL...

The Guild does a great job! I follow Felicia Day on Twitter ... she's at all the major Cons and is frequently seen with Wil Wheaton and other major players in the RRP gamer community.

Now I'll have that song in my head all day! hehehe

      Lance and Christopher,
TY. That was what my husband said, I just couldn't remember (it's quite a mouthful compared to the ease of 'make money online, LOL)

      Christopher,
The lesson to marketers would be: they aren't trying to sell anything. They provide a quality product to a rabid fanbase and supplement the cost of producing that product through advertising. It's anti-internet marketing.
      BRILLIANTLY PUT!

      Caleb,
Just don't get hooked on the game. My MIL is hooked and I mean like, 'needs a VGA Intervention' kind of hooked. It's BAD.

I have been wanting to put together a web series for awhile now, but keep going back and forth on cost. I want to to do something that looks visually different from everyone else out there (i.e. shoot each episode like it is a short film.) I

wouldn't want to be a youtube partner though as you could make much more money joining up with a reputable ad network and have them serve video ads for you.

Ok.. excellent suggestion, what are some 'reputable ad networks?'

      -Dani

P.S. I have some similar ideas and thoughts myself.. nothing 'well thought out' just yet, just those ones that sit in the back of your mind until some 'event' jolts you to actually FORM some plans.

Yeah I am well past the actually FORM plans state, have several webseries scripted out in the 12 to 15 episode range. It's just the look of things that I am hung up on. I do feel the mockumentary look from the Office would translate nicely for a web series. Other than that, its just about having professional audio equipment or spending your days in a studio (or a closet full of clothes lol) doing ADR work.

I joined Twitter because of Felicia. I've been a fan of The Guild since season one, before they partnered with Microsoft. Back then they were running on their own money and fan donations. She is an actor (I knew her because she was one of the Potentials in the last season of Buffy) so she had some connections, but she wasn't rich and powerful.

Game On just came out on itunes this past week and became number one, beating Kate Perry. She has a huge fanbase now, but she put a lot of time and effort into building it.

She's done a ton of interviews about making web series, so read those if you are interested.

      I didn't know she partnered with Microsoft. That's quite a bit of background, thanks a lot. {RABID BUFFY FAN HERE}

I'll look for those interviews, very interesting. And moving to.

      Kudos to her.

Just wanted to add that I believe Felicia Day created this web series because she couldn't find work--and now she is quickly becoming a huge star. One of the most talked about reasons that The Guild is successful is because it embraces gamers instead of lumping them into a nerdy stereotype. It really is a show for gamers made by gamers.

Day also battled with a WoW addiction according to one of her interviews, which is where she got the idea from for the web series. It's a very accomplished show and I believe today has a much more professional production unit than it did when it started.
