XboxRepair.net or XboxRepair.org?

Which one would you go for?

Say I wanted to rank for "xbox repair" with an informational site (that makes money by recommending an xbox repair guide on Clickbank), would you rather use .net or org in this case? Do you think the .org extension would entice more people to click in the SERPS?

By the way, I'm just using xbox repair and the domains as an example. I'm thinking of registering these two "repair" domains for another console..

    Get the .net. Both domains will have the same SEO value but .org is normally only used with actual organizations.

      i agree, also my thought:

      The name .net would tie in nicely with an xbox related site because Microsoft make the Xbox and Microsoft also offer the ".net" service like MSN and programming.

    If it's got anything to do with Microsoft, don't. They're very protective of their
    trademarks, and they mostly sue rather than send a letter demanding you give
    it to them.

      You will be fine. I use the word "Microsoft" in a lot of my domains as I provide Microsoft training products. I am in constant contact with Microsoft as they review the material on my sites and they have never once even mentioned my domain name to me.

        Maybe. That's really up to Microsoft, though I haven't seen them take action
        against subdomains.

        Probably because they decided working with you is a win-win situation. It's up
        to them to decide who to work with and whom not to allow using their marks.

    Listen to Dave's advice.

    Microsoft doesn't screw around.

    Any site out there that's currently operating with an infringing MS mark in their domain is on borrowed time, and they'll likely regret ever registering the domain.

    There was a kid who was seemingly doing well in the IM niche a while back who got nailed with a $2 Million judgement as penalty for domain-squatting on some microsoft TM's.

    And they were just "parked" domains.

    Haven't heard from him (or of him) since.

    Register original domain names and then include unique content about MS products if need be, making sure to properly identify their trademarks and services according to the following MS Trademark usage guidelines:

    General Microsoft Trademark Guidelines

    Don't brush this off.

    These guys will nail you.

    If MS can literally win in a lawsuit against the US Government (yes, they won), think about what they can do to you.

    Domain-squatting is seen as a serious offense. Don't think that a Nevada Corp (or anything) can protect you from a multi-billion dollar giant.

    Just drop it and move on.

      .org is for non profit organizations IIRC.

      But yeah, be very careful using any name associated with Microsoft.

    If it's a product name, you might not be able to use it. My son had a site called ipod repair and got a letter that it had to be changed. So now he uses irepair instead. So you might have to play with the wording.

    Your thread actually breaks my heart as it reminds me of the five - yes, FIVE - Xbox 360 units I've lost to the dreaded 3 red lights of death. Though one of them was outside Microsoft's warranty, the three were replacement units of the second one.

    I'm now waiting for the sixth unit, which is the fifth replacement unit, and it's been almost 2 months now. DIY repair is becoming more and more appealing to me.

        I ran an Adwords campaign once using an .org domain as my display URL and the entire campaign BOMBED with close to zero clicks. Then, I switched it to a .com domain and there was a DRASTIC INCREASE in the no. of clicks I got. This should tell ya which to go with

        I don't have an Xbox, but alot of my friends have the Arcade and Premium versions and have never had any trouble atall. However a friend of mine thought he was cool and went and got himself one of the black 'Elite' systems only to have it overheat and blow up on him within a week of him buying it.

        I think there is definatly a market out there for DIY though, there seems to also be alot of people doing 'firmware' to there Xbox 360s nowdays aswell, its a tricky process and requires technical knowledge but basically this allows people to make "back up copys" of thier 360 games and makes the 360 have the ability to play them (you can even change the speeds, so you can choose to speed up the loading times which also makes the 360 louder, or slow down the loading times which makes it quieter). Ofcource this allows people to rent a game for a few quid, copy it, return the rented game and keep a copy saving themselves alot of money.

        I have an eBook on this if you want it. It could be something to include in your camaign.

      I made sure when I purchased mine that it had the updated motherboard and I bought a little 5 dollar fan at walmart, seperate electrical plugin NOT tied to the xbox in any way just sits behind it. I also added little extensions to the glued sliders they use for legs to get it up off the shelf it sits on for better air flow. When I am not using it, most of time, I have it unplugged. Never had any problems with it and I have had it for couple years now.

          My son had one of the very first units. It got the red ring of death exactly a week after the 1 year warranty. (This was before microsoft extended the warranty to 3 years).

          20,000 sold repair guides later -I can say that I've never been so happy to have a broken console.

    I see a lot of people chiming in with a choice between the two, probably better to take some good advice as above and forget about any trademarked domain.

    domain-squatting better know for the last 12 years or so as cybersquatting.. A cybersquatter would register a companies trademarked name for the sole purpose of selling that name at a high profit..

    For those of you that remember Dr Jerffery Lant (which fled to canada) he used to do a great deal of cybersquatting which started his empire into the online scam mall that he had..

    You can perfectly register Xbox in a domain name just as long as you do the following...

    The fact that you are not claiming to be the company makes a big difference. Now this also depends upon what you want to use the domain name for also. Creating a search engine (of any type) using googlebites.com will get you into trouble with or without a disclaimer.

    Law makers are getting tight on this though also.. Is it worth the hassels to even try ? I would not bother but thats me...

        This really sucks. I didn't know they could do that. I registered xbox720mods.com a long time ago. I am guessing it is pretty much worthless now. I registered those domains since xbox was starting to have customizable face plates for the xbox 360.

        I don't really use it... but was planning on flipping it if their next console is called "xbox 720". It was an impulsive purchase on a whim.

        As for the domains the OP was talking about... I avoid registering a domain with anything other than .com except when trying to protect a brand name. In that case I register all the TLD's I can afford. But in this case, if you must have that specific domain name go for .net. However in lieu of this Trademark business mentioned in multiple posts I would just come up with a different name.

    Just find another domain, one that's neutral.

    Definately .net over the .org. Of course a .com being the first choice always.
    Even better would be a pre-owned domain that has age and pre-existing links, not always easy to find with the keywords you need though

    However for an easy life, staying away from regsitered trademarks is a wise move.

        That is funny I had one site up to 350 uniques a day and still crappy sales. Then I looked at the demographics for that niche. It's basically kids and pot heads. Not exactly the type to spend money...

    I don't think it matters that much... Just be sure if you do use an .org type of domain, that you put an "organizational type" of spin to the site. Other then that I would go for the .net. If you cant get either a .com,.net, or a .org... I would just move onto something else don't waste your time with .info type sites. But, again that's just me.
