Advice for newbie getting started with IM...Please

Hi everyone,

Thank you in advance, to all who have taken the time to review my post and comment.

Like the title states, I am a newbie. I very much would like to learn IM. I do not have unrealistic goals, and I know there is no system, which will magically dump thousands of dollars in my bank account each day. I realize that those who do well with IM have worked very hard and attained their goals over time, just like any successful off line business would require.

I have a job, so I am not destitute and desperate to make fast money. My goal is to learn IM, and do it right taking very small steps along the way. IM is a very interesting subject to me, and the journey of learning the process is something I know I will enjoy. I would eventually like to build an IM business, which is scalable and has multiple sources of income. I do know that this will take work and time. Heck, I would be over joyed just to make a single sale!

My question to you is where do I start? I have been lurking on this site and others for a while. To be honest, there is SO much information, that it is information overload for a newbie!

Everyone seems to have a product, and many recommend producing a give away product first, which enables one to build a mailing list. Is this the way to go? Or is there a better option to start off? I'm not opposed to buying/reading a good "How to...", but there are SO many. How does one choose?

How does one decide the subject of a new free product? I'm sure there are thousands of free products available, but how does one figure out what people will download? I could write a terrific free product, but if it's never downloaded, then it's not worth anything. What are the steps to get that product visible online and get individuals to download? How do you keep/organize your mailing list?

I am very proficient with computers and many types of software. In fact part of my "real job" is producing a 40 page quarterly publication, which is mailed out to members of a non-profit organization. So I am well schooled in desktop publishing...InDesign, Photoshop and etc.

Again, I really appreciate you taking the time to help.

Take care,

Elizbeth

Warrior forum is a great place to find free information, and to learn. In terms of where to begin. I'd recommend Fiverr.com, it's a good place that you can do some minor work to earn money online, but it doesn't require any special skills really.

      Coby,

Thanks, I will check it out.

      Orator,

I'm not interested in doing freelance work for others. I'm interested in building my own business and promoting it using proven marketing techniques.

You can either, get involved in product creation or affiliate marketing. Either way, learn to build your list and it can make you money for both scenarios.

The most important thing when you are just starting out is, I forgot to add just now, to be patient... And take action on a consistent basis... I understand that you have work commitments and all, but I'm sure you can spare yourself about 30 minutes to an hour every single day to work on your Internet Marketing stuff right?

By taking action on a consistent basis, and follow exactly what you have learned in this forum, as well as other Internet Marketing guides that you have read, I'm sure you'll be able to generate your first dollar online in no time!

If you encounter any problems, just post them in the forum... And I'm sure you'll definitely get all the help you need! You may also wish to send me a private message if you wish to ask me any questions on Internet Marketing... I'll definitely do my best to help...

Good luck and have a great weekend ahead!

    Hi Elizabeth

The simplest way to get started is to first decide on what you are good at... From the post, I can see that you are well versed in computing - In particular fluent in using software like InDesign and Photoshop...

If I were you, what I'll probably do is to create a website dedicated to sharing some of your experiences on using photoshop - Where you can include step-by-step instructions on how people can go about editing an image/photograph, tweaks that they can use to enhance their pictures, and so on...

I'm sure that there are many people out there who are looking for such information every single day (from all over the world). And how you can generate money from your website is either through Adsense, or you can look for products/services related to InDesign / Photoshop - Dedicate single posts to evaluate each and every product that you are intending to recommend to your readers (1 blog post per product review)... In your review, you may want to state down what the product can do for them, the pros and cons of it, etc. And you can have a link (which is your affiliate link) where people can purchase the product from (and when they do so you generate a commission).

Another way I can see that you can generate money on the Internet is that within your website, you can offer your design services to people and you can charge them either for consultation or taking up graphic design projects, etc.

Of course, there are many different ways that you can generate money from your website but the above are just some of the few that I've thought of off the top of my head...

Last but not least, check out this forum regularly... One of the mistakes I've made when I first started off a few years back was not checking in this forum and I ended up going one big round and made lots of mistakes before I eventually made my first dollar online... This forum contains lots of very useful information which I am perfectly sure you'll find useful in your Internet Marketing journey...

I have also written some articles in my blog that's dedicated to newbies in Internet Marketing... You may like to check them out via my forum signature...

If there's anything you like to ask about Internet Marketing, feel free to let me know, and I'll definitely do my best to help...

    Good luck!

    Cheers

    Hi elizbeth,

In IM there are a lot of models that you can follow but people usually concentrate around just a few. Most of the marketers I know are doing one of the 3:

    1. Paid traffic to cpa offers
-traffic sources: ppc (google, facebook), ppv(mediatraffic, trafficvance), media buying
-monetization with networks like: copeac, hydra, neverblue, clickbooth, azoogle

    2. Free traffic to affiliate offers
-traffic sources (mostly google; plus social media elements in some cases)
    -monetization with adsense, clickbank, cj

    3.Own info product
    -traffic sources (jvs and affiliates)
    - either through big networks like clickbank or through mailings

Each one is a sound business model if you invest the time and effort. It depends now which attracts you more.

You can start building a list for a very little price.

Get some very cheap hosting and a domain name.

First, sign up to viral eBook explosion. Brand a couple of eBooks and there you have some eBooks avadible to read and give away to build your list. Upload 1 to your host

Then you need an autoresponder. There are some free ones like listwire but choose aweber, they provide the best service on the internet in my opinion.

Create a squeeze page using a html editor. Or pay someone to do it. You can also google "Squeeze Page Templates" and it will come up. Then add your autoresponder form code you got from aweber.

In the first followup message, write something like:

    Thankyou for subscribing
    Here is your download
    ---> (download link here) <---
But take a look at this special offer as well
    (affilite link here)

Then write the rest of your followup series.

Then, Upload your squeeze page and drive traffic to it using any method you can!

If you need more information go here and download the 6 free eBooks. 4 are on email marketing if thats what you are into.

Maybe you could create a script?

Look around the boards, find a recurring problem that people are having, design the script or have it designed for you.

The coolest thing about IM is that you don't have to do all the work yourself. You can outsource practically every part of your business an reap the benefits. The coolest business out there in my opinion

I use Bluehost and Hostgator is another popular choice.

I do want to encourage you again to join the War Room. There is something there for everyone no matter what aspect of Internet Marketing they're into.

I think you have a great attitude and I am betting that you will go far. You are sensible about this and given your background and ability to express yourself in written form you should go far in IM. I am also sure that with your publishing background you have much to offer everyone as far as packaging, branding and other aspects of desktop publishing that might escape my mind at the moment.

Get a product to sell. It doesn't matter whether u know how to or not, cos along the way u will figure it out. Quality products with resale rights are everywhere, if u know where to find them. Once you've found one, set it up and then u learn how to use the Internet to market your new business product.

There's no point chasing after the lastest CPA techniques, latest PPC techniques etc etc. Do what has been proven to work and money will follow. and that is get your own product to sell.

Building a list is definitely a biggie. Give away a free ebook or even software to build your list using aweber. Study list building wherever you can find info on it.

With your expertise you could start making easy money on Fiverr to get some start up cash.

Amazon is has a good affiliate program and is easy to convert customers. Clickbank is also good.

Use Facebook and Twitter as free sources of promotion, build up your friends on those and offer something of value.

Hope that helps a little. Good luck !

Have you checked out www.challenge.co? Really good way to get started in fundamentals.

I think too many people place an emphasis on making money straight away, but that process is down the track. First of all you need an idea, then you need traffic, then you can convert those visitors and make money. One thing at a time!

Simple and Easy as an Affiliate Marketer...

--- Choose three to four products on clickbank(that are in hungry crowds)
--- Register a .info domain for all the products
--- Write 50-100 articles targetting various keywords and submit to EZA. After that take that article and build more backlinks to this article by submitting it to other directories.
--- Or you can do videos. Do 50-100 videos real fast. You can get it done within a week.
--- Wait for your results. See which niche worked best for you and which you want to work with.

Then the week 3 and week 4.

    --- Create your squeeze page
--- Create your give away book
--- Write your follow up sequence. Go and download Mark Ling's two free reports he gave away recently. Read both the reports: AffiloJetpack Launch | Affilorama
They have enough information for you to start taking action.
--- Prepare the 365 day follow up sequence. the whole week for this thing only.
--- Do keyword research for your niche. find all keywords and stuff.
--- Get software like camtasia, article submission softare(i don't use 'em. i've found better ones). But i heard incansoft products are average good. get your hands on articlebot, rssbot, socialbot and videobot.
--- Register a .com or .org domain and put your wordpress blog up. Use the info domain for building your list and dot com for building your site in the search engine.

Week 4 - Start your work.
--- Create videos and articles like crazy. Dominate every keyword phrase that you can get in your list. Churn out 10 articles and 10 videos every single day 5 days a week. from week four to week 8. That'll be 25 days.

After the 25 days, you will have built a solid business. IF you need any assistance, follow until week 2 and ask for help.

My advice would be to learn about MARKETING in general, not just what's commonly thought of as "internet marketing" around these parts (ie: affiliate marketing, info product publishing, CPA, etc.).

The reason why you should learn about marketing (and business/entrepeneurship in general, while you're at it) is that you have to SELL stuff in order to make any money, therefore getting really good at selling stuff is the most important skill to master, as far as your bottom line is concerned. Understanding customer psychology, what makes people buy stuff and how to get them to buy from YOU is far more important than being especially web savvy, IMO.

If my goal was making money, I'd much rather have a thorough understanding of marketing and not be very web savvy versus being really web savvy and not understanding marketing.

I would even start with the book "Marketing for Dummies" simply because it gives a good overview of what marketing is, creating a marketing plan for your product or service, etc. I'd also head over to the Copywriting section of this forum and look at the big stickied thread of recommended copywriting books, as copywriters have to master the art of getting people to buy stuff, so you'll gain some valuable insights into how to sell stuff online by at least gaining a working understanding of copywriting.

My other advice would be don't reinvient the wheel. Find other sites that are successfully doing what you want to do, and then "reverse engineer" what they do and build your own sites around that. This keeps you from having to play the whole guessing game of wondering if a particular approach works or not because by looking at sites that are successful, you KNOW what they're doing is working.

For example, if your plan was to create a blog and monetize it, you might look at a successful blog like Yaro Starak's "Entrepreneur's Journey", and use that as a model to follow. How is he monetizing it? What types of things is he doing to promote it? What kind of content is he posting? What's he doing to keep people coming back to the site? and so on. I think he even has a free report where he goes into all the above anyway, so in that case, you may want to check his website.

Another example is if you wanted to create and sell an information product, then you'd identify the most successful information products in that niche and model what they're doing to promote and sell their products. In any case, don't necessarily pay attention to what people are selling you, but HOW they're selling it to you, because through their sales process, they're essentially TELLING you what's working for them.

And like Soldier said, don't buy yourself into any courses. Your investments will have to be to build your business. Your skill set can be acquired through practice. Practice is the key to building your skill set. In the next few weeks, these are the investments you should be making:

    - Hosting
    - Domain names
    - Autoresponder(I recommend Aweber)
    - Video creation software
    - Article submission service or software(i use service. cheaper and better).
    - Influence by Robert Cialdini(Buy this book)
    - Think and Grow Rich by Napolean Hill
    - The Greatest Salesman in the world
    - Ultimate Sales Letter 3rd edition by Dan Kennedy.
    - I don't think a war room membership is really required. Your choice.

Start with Think and Grow rich and one of the other three books(Influence). Read it every day for thirty minutes. 30 minutes think and grow rich and 30 minutes influence. If you read it out loud, you will internalize it.

Keep reading it every day for 90 days obsessively. After day 90, I'm sure you'd be one of the best persuaders and business woman on the planet.

    DISCIPLINE IS THE KEY.

I am trying to build that...

I would strongly suggest you delete this word from your mental vocabulary. It is fatal! In NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) context, it sort of programs your mind to 'give it a go' and thus put in minimal effort.

Instead, use 'do my best'. Instead of 'I am trying to build that...' , say 'I am doing my best to build that'. An exclamation mark if you want!

Yes it will be a very tough regime to follow especially at the beginning. But soon afterwards, this connection with begin to take place in your brain (neuro-connections!) and it will EMPOWER you and this will force you and your SUBCONSCIOUS MIND to put in 100% effort - thus receiving optimal results!

        P.S I am new here
        Daryl,

Welcome to the warrior forum. This is one of the best forums and you'll definitely have a great time. There are lots of guys who have been successful in IM(they are from singapore).

So you do have inspiration to start with. I notice that singaporeans are naturally hard working and success oriented. That's why you guys have grown so much in the last 25 years than other asian countries.

Work hard, be persistent and you will succeed. NLP - what is the one book you would recommend to study nlp?

        Thanks,

I'm a total newbie too. I got my feet wet with it a little before but I haven't devoted much time to it. The best way to learn stuff is simply to do it. Try things out and see what happens. That's the process.

            Hi,

I have taken all of the advice to heart. I have been working diligently in the last weeks to read as much as possible. I am "doing my best" to write out a plan to follow.

There is so much involved, and so much one must learn just to get a landing page setup. It's not that difficult of a process, but it does take a lot of research time to get the process down and obtain the tools required.

Again, thank you for all of the advice!

That's so true. Most of IM is relatively simple, but it's not easy. It takes time. It does appear that you have the mindset and abilities to succeed. I wish you the best!

Great attitude Elizabeth! The only thing I'd add is to take action sooner than later. Many IM newbies want to get everything perfect before they start, and that never happens.

You can tweak things as you go, but make sure you take the first step.

    Wishing you success!

This is the best investment I have seen in ages - For just $1.00 you can get 4 coaching sessions - And the coaching is from internet marketing legend Chris Record.

How to, - How to, - How to..........

After you have read all the suggestions in this Forum, you have many thoughts to sort out no doubt. One thing I would like to add is: be wary when the promoting advice stresses, "do what ever it takes"! Think what that means; it takes money to promote. But don't sell your car or take out a 2nd mortgage to get the money to promote with. Some "sharks" will encourage you to do exactly that, - reasoning that if you are truly sold on their idea, - you won't hesitate.

Thanks again for all of the comments and encouragement. I don't plan on any second mortgages or anything along those lines. Nor do I plan to purchase any guru's system.

In the past couple of weeks, I have read anything that I could get my hands on for free. I have made notes and feel that I have a very basic knowledge of the required skills, tools and etc.

I have no unrealistic goals. I would be thrilled just to get a few op-ins on a mailing list! At least I would know that I'm making progress, which can be built upon.

I have been participating in The 30 Day Challenge, and it has helped to clear the fog tremendously. I just wish the entire course was presently available for download.

I wish all of you good fortune with your campaigns!

    Take care,

    elizbeth

    Hi Elizabeth

I don't know whether this has been sent to you but one of the guys I really found helpful was Chris Farrell. He was a complete newbie a couple of years ago and has since built himself and very profitable and very sustainable business. He explains things very easily and I do believe he has a 21 day course on getting started online.

    Best of Luck
    Junior
