Newbie Really Confused: Niche worth going after...??

Hey Guys,

I'm new within the last month to IM. I bought Market Samurai, and one of the guidelines for newbies is to NOT go after keywords mentioned on >30,000 webpages globally.

I found a possible niche in "green tea weight loss". Either that phrase or a variation of it has <30,000 competing pages, and seems to meet the other criteria Market Samurai has for a viable niche keyword to focus on. I have a reasonable chance of landing in Google's top 10, and I could go and test the market, except...

I'm really confused here... Because the niche, "Get Your Ex Back" is a huge success on clickbank, and here on the Warrior Forum, many people have said it's a great niche if I work hard and find a new way to approach it - yet it has ZERO keyword phrases out of the 200 that Market Samurai generated that are <30,000 competing pages.

These seem like direct opposites and I have no idea what to really look for here. How could I possibly ever place on the front page of Google with "Get Your Ex Back?" .... That's the goal, after all, right?

I'd go with your first idea...and I wouldn't tell anyone....you might find that sharing it here is like doing the research yourself then giving away your idea...so I'd take it off the post! But anyhow, I wouldn't suggest a newbie go after a challenging niche like "get your ex back" where there are already sites selling it and such. You also need to check how much red and yellow you see compared to green when looking at the top 10 sites which MS shows you. Keep researching til you find one with lots of green so you have plenty of opportunity to work to get on the first page!

  • Your competition is the first 5 spots on Google for that search. Look at who is there. Reverse Engineer with SEO for Firefox or some other plug in or method.

Can you out compete the first 5? If you can then go for it. If you can't then find another phrase or variation on the phrase.

It's that simple. It doesn't matter if there are one million or 30,000 competing. You can either get there or you can't. But before you do that make sure there is actually a market searching for those terms... and you can not just rely on the keyword phrase... lots of automated bots feed those phrases.

+1. The number of competing pages can be a guideline but more so it's about the guys on the first page then the other tens of thousands. That's your competition.

Look at what the top guy is doing, then reverse engineer him.

See your PM.. none of these are good niches for newbies, this is why everyone and their brother gives them as examples all over the place.

Thank you all for the great advice. Very welcoming to be a newbie here.

Thanks Dremora, for the PM. I was unable to reply due to 50 post minimum.

      Cheers,

Meh....not buying it. The relationship/dating niche would be the first direction I would send a newbie in. Their target audience is rabid and they are much easier to sell to than folks looking for green tea, in my opinion... although I'm not a big fan of green tea

to add to what internetmarketingIQ said, it's all about the competition of the top 5 sites. Figure out who and what they are and why they are ranked well for the specific term.

Avoid keywords that are dominated by authority sites. It won't be worth your time and effort especially if you are new to this. Tools like market samurai should only used as indicators but be sure to double check their results as well.

Organic search will definitely get you mad traffic if you make it to the top 5..but think about the other routes. Social media is a great way to get traffic..video marketing, article posting, twitter, facebook, etc.

Ok...sure the niche "get your ex back" might be crowded but that is for a reason. If you are hoping to rank for that exact match you do have some work on your hands...BUT, look into long tail keywords. This is key....

    >30000 Requirement is terrible. There is a reason why there are so few competing pages!

I have ranked overnight for keywords with 500k competing pages. As long as you understand SEO, you should have no problem widening your niche research to anything under 500k and be able to easily rank.

Focus on health, make money, and relationships. There is a reason they are the top three. That is where a majority of the money is online. Find a sub niche in one of those categories that fits your requirements and go from there.
