Google Analytics and Cpanel's Awstats. Nothing more, no fancy plugin. From my experience, Analytics is closer to the truth.

On another site of mine, however - I use Adfreestats - a nice stats service that seems to give the most accurate results for real visitors - aren't we interested in that ?

  I use the WP Stats plugin as well as Google Analytics. Simply paste the analytics scripts in your footer.php and you're g2g.

  Google Analytics is good but is very dated, 24 hours can pass before you get any stats.
  
  I would suggest using both Google Analytics and Statcounter then you would get a overall picture of what types of traffic are coming to your website.
  
  Both are easy to install in the footer area of your blog.

  I dumped Google Analytics because it slows the sites down, in my opinion...and I rely on the cpanel's Awstats which is all I'll ever need

Keep a track on your users & it will help you to stay away from spammers too.

I use stats plugin & WP widgets to keep track, I have mostly used Analytics tool provided by Google as well. It helps to analyze the traffic at par with the site ranking & works well for me.

Using stats via counter apps is off now & there are new ways by which we can evaluate our rankings

Google Analytics.
I think it's very powerful.
It's efficient and i am doing my job very great with it.
I recommend it for everyone who love's "easy-to-use" features.

Google analytics counts ONLY users with Java, also a long list of things google analytics doesn't count as visitors even if they are.

Statpress will become a great plugin, they keep updating for new bots to be counted as bots, pretty soon they should be accurate.

  Like Karen, Google analytics was dumped because it slows sites. However, Google supposedly has new code for GA that fixes this. (Haven't tried it yet.)
  
  For WordPress stats - ZdStatistics has worked well showing where people are coming from and what keywords are used for search to find the site.
