Domain name and Hosting Company

Hi! I'm a newbie who's new into blogging. I've read that it'll be better if you have your own domain and hosting. I'm willing to spend a couple of bucks to get my own domain name and hosting but my budget is really limited. Can you please give any suggestions on where can I get a cheap (but not really crappy) domain and hosting?
I've read some negative feedbacks for godaddy. And hostgator is pretty good for a starter, they are offering a coupon where the price is cheaper for the first few months (correct me if I'm wrong)??

Other suggestions?

Any response will be greatly appreciated.

All the best,

I would HIGHLY recommend NameCheap, for Domain Registration, and Bluehost, for hosting.

I use namecheap for all of my domains and bluehost for hosting. Do a search for coupon codes for namecheap to get them slightly cheaper. I've heard Hostgator are good but I've never used them.

I agree about Bluehost. I've been using them for over a year now and haven't had any problems, and their customer support is good as well if you're ever having any problems.

Bluehost are pretty good and reasonably priced. We use Bluehost and Hostgator for hosting and Godaddy for our domain names. Never had any problem with any of them and have been using them for years.

I'd go with hostgator for hosting and namecheap for domains. Don't get them both at the same place. Always better to keep your domains separate from your hosting account.

Personally I think Namecheap for registration and Hostgator for hosting. But that doesn't necessarily matter very much: the important thing is to register and host in two different places.
Same set up and opinion here! Never have all eggs in one basket!
If you can afford it go with hostgators reseller account, otherwise get a baby account and google for hostgator and namecheap accounts. Hostgator might have a 1Cent / first month voucher which safes you $25.

I use Namecheap for Registration and Hostgator for Hosting...

I have one GoDaddy account, but I find it more cumbersome to navigate and more expensive for hosting.

          For Hosting - Hostgator

Use the coupon code: <WordPress> in order to get their $.01 price for the first month.

          For Domains - Namecheap

The first year of WhoisGuard is free, and only $2.88/year thereafter.

Both offer Live 24/7 Support online and by phone. They have both "talked me down from the ledge" a few times.

For sure, there are other good companies, but you can't go wrong with these two.

          Best wishes.

I particularly like Namecheap, it is not as flashy as Go Daddy but it doesn't also try to upsell you every 5 minutes and try to trap you into paying for things you neither want or need.

They also have excellent forum support, I asked a question there and got a reply on the very next day which was actually relevant to my query and not just a copy and pasted answer even though it was short and sweet. And believe me, there are plenty of places out there were you may not get a reply of any kind for days or weeks if ever.

The whole way they do tings makes it seem that they really care for the customer, and not just the bottom line which means they will always get my money.

              Indeed - exactly so.

I'm gradually migrating from GoDaddy to Namecheap and wishing I'd done so a year or two earlier.

Ooh, I didn't even know this.

Whenever I've wanted help (and incompetent technophobes like me need help with stuff that most people would laugh at) I've always used their "online support/chat window" thing and the person to whom I've spoken has always been able to resolve my problem immediately, so far.

I'm new here, so I have to prove myself, but I am offering hosting for 1 year to members here for $2 a month. It is unlimited hosting with a Linux server with FFMPEG used for video streaming.

By unlimited hosting I mean unlimited domains, unlimited space, and unlimited traffic.

I know this is an odd first post, so I am going to just say PM me for the link, and let that be that. No links as I don't want to step on any more toes.

I was here in the past, and could not remember what my name was, and I changed email addy's a couple of times, so it was just a lost cause. I have always been a lurker.

With Hosting I believe your most important feature is that the hosting has a cPanel login... Hostagator, bluehost and hostmonster I have used and they are all on par for me and have the cPanel login

      Great Point Cathy.

Fredo, Make sure whatever hosting company you select provides cPanel user interface.

Even if it's not HostGator. But it should be

    Fredo,

I use GoDaddy for my domain names, and the Hostgator Baby account.

Always use a coupon code when purchasing either, the baby account gives you unlimited bandwidth and domain names, my sites are stuffed full of audio and video and articles and no issues to date.

    Most recommended

Also with GoDaddy it takes me forever to find anything, even stuff that should be right there in front of you like the "transfer to another person" option seems to have been hidden for some incomprehensible reason.

About the only thing I use it for now is the closeout domains auction, you can occasionally find some gems here but they have even managed to ruin that over the last few months by changing the whole advanced search field from something that actually worked and which was customisable to something that takes forever to go through every time.

If I check a certain extension ending in a certain timeframe within a price range with a particular keyword, with max listings of 500 and paged navigation then why can't I save that search and go to it every time instead of pissing about constantly?

Also it is ridiculously SLOW, not at all a pleasurable experience.

      Namecheap and Hostgator
      Go together
      Like salt and pepper... :-)

Had a bad experience with GoDaddy - four months after I had transferred my domains to Namecheap from there, they charged me again for renewal. And recently, when setting up a wp blog for a friend whose son had bought hosting on godaddy for her, I was surprised when the install would not go through as it is just a few simple clicks in Fantastico/cPanel (which godaddy does not have).

Kept insisting I join the Community, and on checking the TOS, it said checking I Agree meant they had a free hand to use any member content anywhere anytime in any way they wanted, and would not necessarily inform you either.

Stick to straightforward websites that offer a simple service in a clear open way ( i feel)

I am totally agree with x3xsolxdierx3x!! I am using both Namecheap and BlueHost at the moment!!

FYI, the coupon code for NameCheap in Dec is: JINGLENAMES

On top of BlueHost, alternatively, you may go for HostMonster.. I have compared all the features for both and they are exactly the same! But, HostMonster is USD1.00/ month cheaper than BlueHost.

As a starter, you may go for BlueHost, HostMonster or HostGator.
