I want to start a blog. I've done a ton of research, read the books, and know what it takes.

I only have one problem, I don't know what to blog about.

I've considered my interests and hobbies but frankly there is already a lot of websites that have better and more knowledge than I do.

Everywhere I go someone tells me to look at my passions, my interests, what I like to do, but what happens when those are not viable options?

What now?

Health and fitness is a huge market!

Outdoor sports and Recreation is a huge market!

Life is a bigger market than death (unless you work for a funeral home).

I would set aside some time and find some health and fitness blogs you like to read and see how they are monetizing (or not monetizing) them. If you have a specific sub-niche within the bigger niche, then this can help to get more focused readers and buyers.

With all of those passions that are proven money makers, I'm not really sure why you are at a loss.

Check out Brad Campbell's blog and offer in the WSO section. He also gives you three free videos in his course if you give him an e-mail. It may give you some ideas.

I think people depend on income from the blogs too much. A blog makes a better marketing tool than a business. So figure out what your business is first, and then blog about it. Don't make it the blog. A small handful get big enough for the owners to be supported by ads.

It doesn't matter if there are 1,000,000 blogs about fitness (there are). One more won't hurt. As others said, pick a niche within your topics. Like mountain climbing? Write about that.

I have a PR 3 blog. Do you know where I make most of my money from it? Product reviews. I get free products from companies. I just ask them if I can have something, they give it to me. A $600 vacuum was delivered to my doorstep because I asked about doing a review for the company.

I can sell what I don't want to keep for myself.

I can also sell my writing services (and have done so) to clients. So the marketing effect of it is working. I think it works out much better as a marketing tool.

If you're not an expert, find one and interview them.

It's not a blog, but here's an example of someone who's built up a huge resource of content just from interviewing experts:

Well if your passion isn't a money maker, you can always go with a money making niche market and not your passion. You will just have to work a little harder and research a little deeper. That's it

I have a couple of authority sites with high quality original content and beautiful layouts. They make next to nothing. While my sites that are complete garbage with poorly thrown together useless content are the money makers. Strange but true.

So do you want to blog for fun? Then write good stuff. But if you want to make money then you have to learn how to sell crap just like all other companies do.

You can always blog about products... but the thing that might make your blog more successful is writing about products for a specific group of people.... For example: cheerleaders, lawn care providers, sport enthusiasts (any sport), geocaching, maybe a medical field, etc...

The reason being, instead of blogging about any one product provided by a manufacturer, you're blogging about products that are used by a given group of people. Write about the primary products they may use, how to fix them if they break, what accessories or apparel might go along with them, updates on new releases, colors, sizes, etc....

Pretty soon what you'll find is that group of followers you're targeting will start reading your blog, linking to it, recommending it, even buying products from it - AND because you're blogging about different things that may interest a group, rather than a single product or product line, the amount of relevant and beneficial content you can provide is endless. You can also then contact the manufacturers of all the things you blog about and setup dropship relationships with them so you can sell things without keeping inventory.

I would also recommend doing some youtube videos to go along with each article if you plan to show off products and stuff. Give a close-up and personable inside scoop, showing folks the ins and outs of what you're talking about, covering all the things I mentioned above.

Good luck! Stick with it. I had a retail store that did close to $300k one year in online sales following all the stuff I just told you. Didn't cost me a dime. You can do it.

If you want to make money with a blog, passions have nothing to do with it. Do the niche and keyword research and create a blog in a profitable niche. It's a plus when you are passionate about something that can be profitable, but it's not necessary to be passionate about a niche for you to profit from it. I have a lot of niche blogs and I would say that I am not passionate about many of them.

It seems as though you might be comparing yourself to the other bloggers too much. It doesn't matter if they're "better" or more "knowledgeable" They can never have your exact perspective on things. I saw that you listed a few of your interests earlier. There are a lot of options there! Is there any particular reason why you don't want to blog about those things?

Don't let others with more knowledge stop you. That's just silly, it really is, hopefully you will realize that. You will learn and gain more knowledge as you go along.
Please do start a blog on something that you are passionate about, don't just chase money like so many people do.

It is not always true that you passion will lead you to making a very nice income.

Even if you find a very profitable niche and this topic is not even close to your real passion, you can still make money.

    Hi,

I can't think of a niche that has no concurrence. You can do well if you speak about your passions even if your concurrents are more knowledgeable. As a consumer I prefer a person who easily explain his ideas even if he is less knowledgeable. You need to put all the advantages on your side, this includes SEO, quality of your writings and the visual style of your blog.

It's ok to blog about things in overpopulated niches, but the key is to put your own spin on things. For example, instead of coming up with a basketball blog, you'd come up with a blog that writes posts on who was the worst player of the week and which team performed the poorest.

You catch my drift? The key is to be unique.
