Because it can provide income for years, and lead someone to become good at launching more and more products over time. I certainly would never go back having sold thousands of software products.

Rather than selling a product I prefer to sell services. My two reasons are that customers pay for good services that meet their expectations and rarely seek to change you if they are satisfied, and anyone who masters something can sell its skills as a service without the need of a huge investment

    David,

This is really as easy as this.

You don't have to share the commissions like when you sell for others.

This is the biggest benefit of them all.

    Control.

    1. I control the content, the sales channels, the pricing, etc.

    2. I control whether or not the product even stays on the market and whether or not I can sell it. No bogus account closures, with forfeit of commission. No affiliate programs ending, while still profiting from the work done by affiliates.

You also have a better chance of becoming known if you have your own products - and NAMES sell products.

1 - Chicks dig it (unless you're a chick and the it's "Guys dig it")

2 - If I become incapacitated and need to be put in a home it will afford me the income and luxury of a home where they won't beat me and let me sit all day in a dirty diaper.

3 - It allows me the freedom to create a real quality product on any subject that strikes my fancy given that there are many niches with either no products or quite lame products (with a big boy "L")

4 - I have a huge ego and want to be known as an authority on many subject so I can tell chicks that I wrote a book on....oh...I don't know....100 ways to pleasure a woman (refer to #1)

5 - It's the "in" thing to do.

6 - The "I want to be a rockstar" thing didn't work out so being a highly respected and filthy rich author was next in line for my bucket- list.

7 - Ok...this is the last one and the real reason. You have complete control over the product and the potential to make a good living by incorporating this into your business model. Affiliate marketing is great but diversification is key to success. Eggs...baskets...I get bored writing articles on yeast infections.

        1. having your own product enhances your skill and knowledge on that matter -- since you have to teach/research it!

        2. makes you a better marketer and allows you to systematize it and actually leave it once a funnel is set etc.

I'm pretty sure bretski is really me (or vice versa). One of us has multiple personality disorder. It's uncanny how alike we think.

I can always shave my head though! But I know that I don't have the cranium to be able to pull it off....it's a massive thing! Has it's own gravitational pull!

On topic though....I don't know how many times I have found a niche that I felt motivated to write articles in and didn't have a product to promote to...or a really lame product and I thought "I could write somthing better than this"

For me, that is why I have begun to get into product creation...

Nobody is a newbie at life dude. I am sure that you have gifts and talents that I don't have. I am positive that you have knowledge in your brain that I simply don't. I know that there is probably something that you know that I would be dying to know about. Get where I'm going here? Nobody is immune and I have yet to meet someone that I couldn't learn something from...well, maybe one or two people but that's beside the point.

The point is that you do have life experience and knowledge that is valuable. With IM you can leverage that knowledge and information in your cranium to produce a product that produces money. It might not be some sort of high demand niche but last night I listened to a guy talk about a recipe book that has made him insane amounts of cash....look at the top of this page...Ron Douglas...recipes!!!! Freakin recipes!!!

Don't down yourself or ever feel that you don't have anything to contribute...IM isn't the only game in town and it isn't even a niche that I really work in. Think and dream dude and look at the top of the page...maybe even click the link...

      Hey

There was a recent thread started by Harlan Kilstein about how he made an info product in 2 hours.

There were frustrated warriors posting in that thread about how it was Ok for Harlan to create a product in 2 hours, he has year of experience, how could they do it yada yada yada.

An experienced warrior called Gordon Alexander - handle of gjabiz - made an offer that he would let the first two Warriors who emailed him interview him and then turn that interview into an info product if they wanted.

I got off the phone with him less than an hour ago after interviewing him - and I interviewed him about creating infoproducts. Although it was a short ish interview - around 30 mins - he gave out some great info and has given me a PDF on the topic as well to bundle with the interview.

So you don't have to sell other people's products - you CAN make your own. Whatever your current level. I'll be compiling the interview, the PDf and a transcription together soon - if I can do it, so can you.

I agree with what everyone else has said here, not much to add on my part.

We took our normal, offline biz (stone chip repair on vehicles) and adapted it to the home user in kit form, sold online.

We like controlling our destiny, thru a product that works well, does what it says it will. We like making the money for ourselves, not someone else and getting a % back.

We have the expertise in our field, and believe in what we do, and we have become better people as a result of our hard work and effort.

        Some good ideas suggested above.

        1) Affiliates can drive you traffic and sell your products
You can have a list of affiliates working to sell your own product.

This will grow as time goes on, so you can exponentially make more sales + money.

        2) You can edit your Thank you/download/OTO etc pages
You can edit your own thank you pages, download pages, add Upsells, One Time Offers, offer more things....so you have more channels (control too as others have said) of making more profit, as you can control them pages.

You cant do that much with other peoples products, if you are selling them as an affiliate, so its good to create your own product.

      Appreciating all the answers here!

I think one of the biggest pros goes along with the whole "You control the product/service." You decide how it is distributed, how much you will charge. how refined (nor not in some cases) it is, when to upgrade your product or move on to promoting a different product. Even though leveraging with affiliates, etc is a part of the game, YOU determine how successful you will be with your product(service).

Then again, you also get the ability to have others success be part of your success through your management of affiliates' services.

All in all, creating your own product provides the most diversity for your income building opportunities.

    Absolutely -

1 - Leveraged income - work once, sell multiple times
2 - Multiple income options - sell it, license it, rent it/syndicate it, convert it into advanced trainings, bundle it...
    3. Immediately brands you an expert giving you a higher value in your marketplace - lets you charge more for your time, be more influential in marketing, gain stronger JV deals, etc...
    4. Control - already mentioned, but this is why so many big money makers in affiliate marketing, e-commerce, blogging and advertising eventually create their own product - they realize it is the ONLY way to fully control your income
    5. It makes me look like I am really working hard...when anyone asks why do you sit at home on your a** all day doing nothin!

what I notice with a lot of business owners in our niche and other niches
is this fear of creating a product because they don't think it would be good
    enough to sell.

Product creation isn't as hard as one may think, most of the tools we have
on our laptop or desktop are just fine to use and create a fantastic product,
what most get into trouble with is getting the right elements together to make
    a product sell like hotcakes.

Alex Dawes created an amazing product called desperate buyers which to this
day I believe is one of the best products on the market and is a must read.

here's the thing, if you start with a pdf report you can then scale it up by
adding video and audio, cheat-sheets, mind-maps. Anyway these are just
a few things for the noobs here that are willing to test product creation.

        yes

but more importantly... if it's something about what you like, you can create a business about it, and if you really like it you can expand it and work on it (because you really like it) and you will decide how profitable you will be, how big the business grows...

The last few replies have been touching on something really important.

The highest value information (for which you can charge the most and obtain the highest profit) is "insider" information.

Having a customer for a lead-in product gives you a unique relationship from which you can pull additional inside information and produce ever-higher value information leading to additional products that have increasingly unique content.

Think of it as the Windows development model where each release of Windows draws a ton of feedback allowing the next version to be even better - otherwise known as "iteration" product development.

Reason #1: Trust Towards You. It's your own PERSONAL BRAND. Think about, it's your value made by yourself and you are giving to the world and people know it's YOURS. It belongs to you and nobody else. If the product is good and it delivers on its promises, people will be much more willing to buy whatever you have to sell next.

True business has always been based on trust. If people don't trust you, your chances of selling whatever are much lowered. If they trust you, they'll buy anything. I read this in the psychology of persuasion and it still stands as a great truth(though that particular book has some other flaws).

      Trust, Trust, Trust.

Reason #2: Enjoyable. It's enjoyable to create my own product. It's my own creation, and if it's something I'm really passionate about I'm going to rewrite it over and over until it's perfect. I go with the attitude of "This damn service/e-book is going to be THE BEST service/e-book in the entire universe"; Because I pure and simply love it, it comes out FANTASTIC.

      Enjoy, Enjoy, Enjoy.

this post kind of triggered some crazy thoughts in my head and i was
just thinking about where some people think just because you create
a product it is automatically a business.

now I don't know about you guys but a business and product are like
night and day, a product is just something you have created and are
in the process of forming a business around.

creating a successful business does have a lot to do with creating
a kickass product that sell itself with the marketing budget you have
        to work with.

so a kickass product bundle with well executed marketing plan plus a
rock solid business model equals success.

        what you guys think.

Having your own product is like drilling an oil well.

There is a lot of upfront cost in time and money but if you create a successful product, it can pay you for years to come.

I think the most important aspect of your own product is creating an affilite program around it.

Sure you may be givig away a percentage of the profits but you have no risk. The affilite has to generate the traffic with paid links and othe rmeans. You did not have to do anything but collect your share of the profit.

The key here is that creating a successful affiliate program let you leverage the time of others.

You can then use your time to create another product and repeat the process.

I didn't read any of the responses as I wanted to give an off-the-cuff answer.

    1. Somebody else isn't in control of your future. If you sell somebody else's products, what happens if they change the product, the payout, or stop selling it completely?

    2. You get to keep all the money for your efforts.

Okay...I know you said 2, but I couldn't decide which of the three I thought of were most important, so...

    3. You can have affiliates selling for you instead of being an affiliate.

Okay, time to go read the rest of the responses!

    All the best,
    Michael

Most people nailed down the reasons for selling your own products.

      For me personally:

I have always been creative and product creation was a perfect fit for me.

I like have control over my sales funnels. Due to having control, I have better ways of seeing what types of offers work, what type of traffic works with different offers and tons of other test data.

Affiliates can help me accumulate sales and also more test data. Like I said, that data is one of the most profitable areas in any business. Why do you think people make so much money selling information?

I can create many more different types of offers just by mixing and matching my current products. You would be surprised at how many great offers that can be created with only a few products.

I am building a long term asset that can be sold.
