Hey Warriors,

What do you look for in a web host? How do you know a web host is good or not?

24/7 support, good prices, and have been in business for at least five years (and you will still get a nasty surprise here and there)

also check out if they offer backups, what tools does your plan come with, what are the overage fees....

For me it is all about the hosting support. If you have any problems, you want someone to help you, so choose one that has a good background. You can search for reviews here and I am sure there are many threads opened up about hosting.

    Hello,
I would definitely pick one that has the most members. The one with a lot of tools with cheap price, been in the business for long time. Been recommend by the most people. Online support if you ever have any problem. Be sure to read their policy clearly because it might go against you later. Don't go for the cheapest but go with the quality. I mean don't go for free if you are really doing business because I am sure there something attached.

I've seen host who offer $2 hosting an others that offer $8 hosting. Should I go with the more expensive alternative because they offer premium hosting?

What kind of tools should I look for?

The two most recommended hosting companies here are Bluehost and Hostgator. You'd do well going with either of them. Check the bottom line in my sig file if you want to learn the specifics of what to look for.

Look at Hostgator and then you'll know what companies are good and what companies are not.
I choose a webhost if that company has for an about 5 years in this domain and has good reviews.

    I look for:

    1. Add-on domains (Where you can add more than one domain to your hosting).

    2. A good amount of email accounts.

    3. PHP, MySQL support.

    4. Monthly bandwidth.

With me being a developer, my needs differ from other people.

If you are referring to shared hosting, then look at the provider for:

Longevity, good customer service, multiple add on domains and the ability for a rapid upgrade if you exceed band width - or exceed anything else for that matter.

Also look for good independent testimonials especially relating to overall service and server 'up time'.

Visit some forums that are dedicated to 'web hosting' and read all the latest posts and recommendations.

      Best of luck,

      Jeff.

It depends on what you plan to use it for.
What type of sites? How many sites? Do you need cpanel?

Excellent customer support, extremely low downtime, tools, and ease of use. Personally, I dig Hostgator. Never had a problem with them - plus you can go with the "baby" plan and only pay around $10 a month for unlimited domains, which is all you need if you're just starting out!

The web hosting company I use now gave me a bad suprise recently. I ordered the hosting plan with the most perks for development. What I saw was pretty much unlimited everything with 5 hosted domains. Well, I eventually filled those 5 domain slots and next thing I know I get an email telling me that I've exceeded my 4% cpu allotted to me. They said they would suspend my account if I continued to exceed it in the next 48 hours. Well, I moved two of my sites off of that host and onto my own web server.

Why is it that hosting companies don't tell you about the cpu allotment until after you have paid them. I never see anything about cpu allotment anywhere. I just checked hostgator and they have nothing about it.

Ignore the sales page and read the TOS. Unlimited doesn't always mean unlimited. I would never ever never use bluehost or hostmonster. I have never used Hostgator but I have heard good things about them from WF members. I use hosting24 and I have not had any problems.

Is it best to avoid unlimited hosts?

I have a site that would need shared hosting and another that needs something bigger like a vps.
