Question: indexing of tag, categories and archives

Hi,

I have an issue and would like to get feedback from you all.

I use the All in One SEO plugin for Wordpress and was letting Google index the tag archives as well as the categories and archives.

The reason...I was told that I cuuld bookmark the tag pages and hence get more backlinks.

Well, I think I'm getting hit a bit with dupilicate content filter by G...some of my articles have been deindexed in favor of the tag pages.

What does everyone else do on this? Input is appreciated.

      Yes, that's my name.

I originally had them ticked to 'NOINDEX' myself and am thinking I should go back to that but I want to get some input.

      K

I've always set Category and Tag archives to Index, everything else to NOindex.

Having articles on your site looked at by Google (or any search engine) from two different views (canonical URL and tag archive) is not duplicate content. It's the same content, on the same site, view from different routes.

The search engines understand how blogs operate and don't penalise you for duplicate content because the same article on the same site is viewed from two different angles.

Here's an article that goes into the All-in-one-SEO settings in some detail. Be sure to read the comments as that's where the best information is:

I am having the same exact problem. So I think I am going to set the categories, date based archives, and tag archives to "noindex".

Kind of pointless to have these set to "index" when my main posts are getting deindexed by Google.

I will update my findings when Google re-crawls my site. And hopefully my main posts get indexed again.
